My first association with OPEN is the "open Internet" - no passwords, no log-ons, just http. That's why the open in a lot of the new MOOCs does not ring true for me - they are not on the open Internet, so they are not indexed by search engines which means they are not  discoverable, not linkable, not part of the conversation. That's what I think of first, rather than open licensing.
That's also why I have a problem with the world of apps.
