How to interview web developers?

Discuss the candidates’ experience in web development. How did they deal with missed deadlines, what they don’t like about their job? Focus on the real situations, not imaginary ones. Such questions will help you to understand how the person behaves in different situations and is he/she able to cope with such issues.

Have a look at the portfolio. Find out more details about their favorite project: why they are proud of it, what pros and cons it has, how they made this or that feature.

Ask for recommendations. You’re talking with a stranger during the interview, and 20-40 minutes are not enough to know the person better. That’s why it’s good to have a feedback on candidates’ performance from other companies. They have already worked with this person and know their ex-employee’s strength and limitations.

Give sample tasks. If a candidate is interested in the job, they won’t refuse from spending an hour or two on showing their skills. Base your choice of candidates on their knowledge of web development because that’s what you really need from you future worker.

This approach allows saving funds just like with an outsourcing company while keeping your own team.

How to level up your PHP skills?

1. To separate design from business logics use frameworks, for instance, Symfony.
2. PHP is facing the stage of frameworks, so it's useful to read blogs of the leading PHP developers and follow them on Twitter. Here are some links: Matthew Weier O'Phinney ( https://twitter.com/mwop), Taylor Otwell (https://twitter.com/taylorotwell), Fabien Potencier
(https://twitter.com/fabpot).
3. Learn SQL to process databases.
4. Learn how to create APIs so that you could build back end for a whole mobile development department.
5. Do not focus on PHP only, broaden your outlook. Learn JavaScript because sooner or later you’ll need this technology. Read the news, watch videos, listen to podcasts.
6. Learn English to communicate with your clients directly.

What can programmers do to earn more?

- If you earn more that an average developer of your tech stack, think what your peculiarity is and how you can develop this skill;
- Get more experience. While you’re working as a junion specialist, enrich your knowledge to get promotion;
- Learn English/Spanish/German/French and don’t think that your client is obliged to learn your native tongue just because you have rare skills;
- Learn more programming languages. Choose either the one that is rare, or the one in demand.

It's time for Friday fun! :)
At the first glance, IT jobs look very complicated, and sometimes it's hard to understand who is who.
Toggl made a great cartoon explaining IT jobs with a broken lightbulb. Check it out!

Python is an extremely versatile language. This extreme versatility contributes to its popularity, together with its easiness, abilities, logic, massive number of libraries and the enormous amount of usages. Python programming can be used for practically anything: building web interfaces, analyzing big data, creating games, gluing together parts of the software suites written in other different programming languages, or being a more powerful shell scripting language.
