Node.js is a great language for writing micro-services but what can you realistically expect from it regarding performance and scalability? That was the question I wanted to answer when I conducted my own investigation into just how well Node.js performed against a more established and mature technology.

I evaluated Node.js by writing a functionally identical, multiple datasource micro-service both in Node.js and in DropWizard / Java then subjected both implementations to the same load test. I collected performance measurements of the results from both tests and analyzed the data.

What I discovered was that, at one fifth the code size, Node.js had comparable latency and 16% lower throughput than DropWizard.
