Is it really Gustavian?

Following on from yesterdays post, i'd thought i'd look at another recent trend in the antiques world.

As the Real Swedish Gustavian pieces become rarer and rarer, you are increasingly seeing belgian , german and romanian pieces 'repurposed' as Gustavian either by addition of extra decorative features or by repainting or adding the aforementioned scraping back the paint finish.

They are generally sold as 'Gustavian style' which is BS as they have nothing to do with real Gustavian designs.

So when looking just make sure you know what you are actually buying

You can always ask our advice at www.swedishinteriordesign.co.uk

The Gustavian Scraped Paint ( - or not) fallacy

one of the things that really annoys me is  the constant repetition in the antiques world of the 'scraped back to original paint' malarky.

Lots of swedish gustavian antiques are claimed to be scraped back to the  original paint as if the distressed and scraped look is what they would have looked like originally.

People fall for this all the time - there's nothing wrong with it. Its  great look but its just a paint effect.

The original paint on Gustavian antiques when new would have been a thick course chalky natural pigment paint that would have looked fresh and very chalky. Nothing like the 'scraped paint' look. And there are various people - they know who they are - who recreate the scraped look on furniture that would have been totally different coloured finish or even natural

Its time everyone wised up - again its a great look but thats all it is. So don't fall for the BS!
