An agent recently rejected my dystopian City of Ice and Dreams because "they don't seem to be working for us any more." I take it to mean publisher no longer want these stories. The article suggests the last crop of dystopian books and movies were too close to reality, and thus too "down." Is the dystopia trend in sci-fi dead? What do you think?

I've noticed that WESTWORLD is getting mixed reviews from sci-fi cognoscenti. Some reviewers like the HBO-ness of it (lots of sex, violence, and brooding actors), while others say it's weak on the classic tropes of sci-fi: high-tech, worldbuilding, and so on. Personally, I want to see a CGI walk-on of Yul Brynner, the original WESTWORLD bad guy. Your thoughts?

I'm confused. Isn't the Left Behind series speculative fiction? I mean, the premise is: What if a few hundred thousand random people simply disappeared in an instant? Take away the religious language, and it's an alien abduction story, right? (Rev. LaHaye, author of the series, died Monday.)
