I don't know what to post on here... :P Sooo I will post my Japanese Trains playlist. Yes I am a train nerd. I went to Japan earlier this year, and while I really liked trains before going there, Japan showed me how it should be done! So this is my playlist of random Japanese train videos, lots of commuter trains, bullet trains, etc.
It is amazing how efficient their rail system is! I long for a day when this country's major urban areas have good COMMUTER rail. I stress the commuter part. The focus on high speed rail and light-rail is not enough. People need trains that run regularly and short to medium distances.
The Puget Sound has Sound Transit's Sounder commuter lines, but they only run in the early morning and evening, and not on weekends. They also are forced to use BNSF's main line, having to compete with large amounts of freight traffic. Amtrak is good, but again, the service is sporadic and often late, and again share lines with major freight railways. We need dedicated commuter lines with consistent schedules, intelligently designed routes and stations, and connections to other modes of transport, surface streets, light rail, ferrys, etc.
We also need people to realize that this would be a good thing for the region and pony up and pay for it! Something like this would have to rely on public funds for a good chunk of it, and that means taxes, but the end benefits would easily outweigh the short term sacrifices.
