Good advice for college presidents about how to use social media. It's interesting that so many college presidents still do not use social media. It's kind of ironic when you consider that many colleges' marketing materials include a welcome page from the president (both in their admissions materials and on their websites). It seems like it's not a question of whether a college president should use social media to connect to a school's publics but rather which social media platforms s/he should employ.
A new book shows how leaders using Twitter and Facebook can bring attention to their institutions—for better or worse.

Another story to remind of us of the dark side of social media. Also some good comments about how adults need to be good social media models to young people. Good opportunity for brands' spokespeople, CEOs and other public figures to be leaders in this field. Maybe companies could work with school districts to teach students how to use social media? Sort of the way business leaders were involved in Junior Achievement in the 1970's and '80s.

While this might seem at first glance like a debate over semantics or something for parlor discussion, this post raises some good points for students -- and maybe people starting a company -- about the role public relations should play in an organization.

This excellent post about the careless DirectTV commercial that lampooned the U.S. Appalachian people made me wonder if PR was pulled into this during the planning. Surely a PR person would have raised all sorts of red flags about this utterly stupid commercial.

How about this as the PR person's theme song? Dave Frishberg's "I Want to Be A Sideman," performed by Count Baise & Rosemary Clooney: Count Basie Orchestra, Rosemary Clooney "I Want to Be A Sideman"

One of my very favorite writers. I was deeply saddened by his passing, especially knowing he was in the middle of writing his newest novel. His 10 rules come from a book of the same name:

A PR pro takes a swing as what makes up a typical day in #PR  in +PR Daily.

This breakdown seems pretty accurate to us, although we all know that part of the appeal of PR is that no day is ever the same as the last!
A lot of client management, a lot of writing, and a little bit of fun are some of the key components.
