Swans premiership hero announces retirement, best of luck champ #afl #goswans @sydneyswans

Swans favourite son and premiership hero, Nick Malceski, announced his retirement from AFL yesterday. In a cruel twist of irony, he retired from the game from ongoing knee problems, having already recovered from three knee reconstructions. One of the few players to have successful LARS grafts, Malceski was inspiration for Alex Johnson when he suffered his first ACL injury. The 32 year old still had a year to run on his contract.

Swans set for ANZAC blockbuster with GWS, payback is ours! #afl #goswans @sydneyswans

The Swans are set to renew rivalries with the upstart kids across the ANZAC bridge in round 5 at the SCG. In a boon for the AFL, the two Sydney based teams finished top 4 in 2016. GWS beat the Swans in the first final, while the Swans made the grand final after remembering to turn up in their matches, and the Dogs narrowly beat GWS in an epic preliminary final.

The AFL has released their 2017 fixture after their round 1 sneak preview, with what can only be described as a massive boon for the club. Success begets success and the Swans have been granted their marquee wish.

Their season kicks off against Port Adelaide in the Saturday twilight slot at the SCG on March 25th, following on with 8 games in Victoria, 8 Friday night games, traveling to Perth and Adelaide once each, the inaugural Marn Grook clash at the SCG against Western Bulldogs on a Thursday night, and the first Pride Match for premiership points.

Looking back on the trade period, Nankervis, Mitchell, picks, B+ #afl #goswans @sydneyswans

The Swans were anticipated to be busy in the trade period with the imminent departures of uncontracted players Tom Mitchell and Toby Nankervis. Xavier Richards later requested a trade in the 2nd week of the trade period, while Dean Towers played the field. All up, the Swans traded away 2 players and improved their overall draft position, moving into the top 10.

2016 in review part 3: second half of the season, Mario, AAs, Mills #afl #goswans @sydneyswans

Performances throughout the first season were solid, sometimes spectacular with an occasional dash of the good old Swans that we know. You know, the type that shoots their foot off after playing dice, gambling their limbs, pride and occasionally livelihoods.

The uncontractables, mission #keepthemall as Swans pursue Richards and Towers #afl #goswans

Now that the AFL's trade week has finished, the Swans have turned their attention to their out of contract players. Want-away forward Xavier Richards, who requested a trade to a Victorian era club, is still with the Swans after no other club courted him. It wasn't that the club was asking anything for the uncontracted forward, there wasn't any interest in him.

Swans wreak havoc on trade deadline day, move to pick 9 #afl #afltrades #deadlineday #goswans

The Swans have dug deep into their pockets, joined in the rancour that is #deadlineday and pulled an ace from their pocket. Surprisingly, the Swans were active on the last day of trade week, wheeling and dealing their way up the food chain. First working with GWS to swap a bunch of picks, then having robbed...
