The gate from the Gate street (today Republicii street)

In the architect intention, the actual construction in cylindrical shape of Modarom wanted to be a symbol of the eastern gate from the end of Republicii street. The one who enter through the main gate reaches a corridor flanked by solid walls with crenels, which led - as we can see - to an inner gate guarded by a massive tower, probably located in the area surrounding hotel Coroana. The Gate Street, inhabited mostly by families of brazier and goldsmiths' guild, was considered a distinguished area. In 1577 it passed a law saying that the Moldovan landowners and merchants who came through the main gate had to be accommodated only in the houses on the street Gate. Those coming from Wallachia they had access by Customs Gate (Muresenilor) and hosted in homes across the street with the same name.
During the earthquake of 1802, the fortress gate was badly damaged, and this was the reason It was demolished in the same year.

The gate on the Vamii Street.

From the chronicles of that time we find that the wealthy craftsmen and tradesmen of Brasov, from Renaissance period, decorated their homes inside and outside with beautiful "fresca"( It is a mural painting performed on a fresh plaster, in which the color is chemically built-in, thus, can be preserved for unlimited time ). Such art creations was displayed on the city gate situated on the "Vamii" street. One of the "fresca" was even the portrait of King Sigismund of Luxembourg, who during his reign (1384-1437) has visited several times our city. During his visit in 1395, he ordered that the city walls to be fortified and he supported the inhabitants with donations, namely through tax breaks.

The medieval Brasov

On this old stamp of about 300 years, the time when the Brasov counts only 18000 inhabitants, we cant see the old center of the city with the most significant buildings, of which: the Black Church, The Cathedral Peter and Paul on the Vamii Street (today Muresenilor Street), the St John Church, the House of the Piata Sfatului, etc. We also distinguish some constructions non-existent today. One of them is the Black Gate, situated at the eastern end of the Balcescu Street, somewhere between the Universal Store Star and the National College Unirea, also the gate with domes and bastiones on the Gate Street (today Republici Street), as well the fortress-gate at the end of the Customs Street. The lake from the Gate Street called "Cotoroantelor Lake" does not only have the role of defense. Here the witches and their unfaithful wives were punished by drowning.

Brasovul medieval
