Small is beautiful
Many people, at some point in their life, choose to downsize their property and opt for something smaller. It maybe that the move is a means of freeing up equity from the current property and reducing the costs of running and maintaining the next property. Downsizing is also common once children have left home and during retirement as a large family home is perhaps no longer necessary. Whatever the rationale behind the decision, the practicalities of downsizing need to be well planned as it is often not feasible to fit the same amount of household possessions into a smaller floor space.

Spatial awareness
Ensure you know the dimensions of the rooms of your new property so that you can measure larger pieces of furniture and know whether they will actually fit.

Be realistic
It is important to start filtering through your household contents as early on as you can, particularly if you are downsizing substantially. There is an adage that if something is not useful, of sentimental or aesthetic value then you should dispose of it. Of the items disposed; donate items to the charity shops as far as possible and recycle. It can be difficult to know what action to take with items that have sentimental value but aren’t really essential for everyday life; this is where it maybe worth considering options for storage.
We, in particular, offer an excellent self-storage facility in central Wolverhampton which enable your items to be kept safely and securely, but enables you to have access to the room. We have equipped our facilities with CCTV and secure perimeter fencing. Each room has an individual padlock to enable you to access your own items. It is well worth considering this as an option during the downsizing process.
Less is more
Be mindful of not overstuffing your new property with too many things. It can really cause a smaller space to become claustrophobic and cluttered.
For further information on our self-storage facility please contact one of our advisors on sales@burkebros.co.uk or call 01902 714555

Shipping motor vehicles and motorcycles into New Zealand

We understand that many of our customers moving out to New Zealand wish to take their vehicles with them. The importation of motor vehicles and motorcycles into New Zealand is highly regulated process. There are a number of requirements you’d need to be aware of from a number of key government departments.

Before Shipping
Motor vehicles and motorcycles must meet applicable safety and emissions requirements to be allowed for importation. You must also have proof of entitlement of the vehicle, and standards compliance at origin. It is advisable that you visit the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) website to obtain the most up to date information and factsheets as these often prove to be very useful. We emphasise that it is vital you ensure your vehicle meets the requirements before considering shipping to New Zealand.

After Arrival
Motor vehicles and motorcycles will need to be cleared with NZ Customs. Depending on your residential status and length of ownership of your vehicle you may be able to import it free of ‘Goods and Services Tax’. Further information on this can be found on the New Zealand Transport Agency website.

The Ministry for Primary Industries will then ensure the vehicle is clean and free of any potential quarantine risk material by conducting a physical internal and external biosecurity inspection. (This is a service that we will arrange for you as part of our process, however if any risk material is found in or on your motor vehicle, motorcycle or trailer then additional cleaning services may be required and incur additional expenses.)

Border Inspection
All motor vehicles will need to have their particulars verified including, make, model, VIN or chassis and have the odometer reading checked. This process will be conducted through a border structural inspection in order to check for any structural and water damage. This will be conducted by Independent Verification Services Limited (IVS) and the results will be submitted to the New Zealand Transport Agency.

Finally, all motor vehicles and motorcycles must undergo an entry certification process. This is carried out by an entry certifier to verify that it meets safety and emission standards. It also considers whether the vehicle/ motorcycle is in general good condition, decide if it needs any repairs or specialist certification, and arrange warrant of fitness (WOF) and registration.

For any further information on shipping vehicles or household effects to any area in New Zealand, please don’t hesitate to contact our International Department on 01902 714555 or email sales@burkebros.co.uk.

What do our free home moving surveys involve?

Any professional moving company will want to visit the premises you are moving from. It’s important that the surveyors are able to see the actual volume of household effects that you intend to take with you so that they can generate an accurate quote.

Our surveyors have had decades of experience of assessing volumes of goods for removals and understand every aspect of the removals process, from the number of removal men needed for the job to the size of van required.

Equally, it is important to take the opportunity to discuss different types of access to the properties involved. During our years of operation we have encountered a myriad of different types of difficult access points but it is important to ensure our removals team are well prepared in advance of moving day to make sure there are no delays.

If a company only offers you a telephone or online quote and doesn’t offer to come out to the premises; you could easily incur additional charges once the move is underway. The survey also enables our customers to speak to surveyors about any specialist or valuable items they want moving with extra care. Again our surveyors are well versed in the rigours of packing items such as grandfather clocks, antiques and family heirlooms.

One of our surveyors will also be able to speak to you about our storage facilities should you need storage for the intermediate period before moving into new premises. They can best advise as to whether you’ll need self-storage or containerised storage.

If you are planning a house move and would like to book a free, no obligation house moving survey please contact us on 01902 714555 or email sales@burkebros.co.uk and we’d be happy to book an appointment at a time to suit your convenience. We look forward to meeting you!

A Job for the Girls; Bridging the Gender Gap in the Removals Industry

The removals and storage industry may not be well-famed for leading the way in gender equality, but not to be outdone by our male counterparts, or to be perturbed by an industry that has been traditionally male-dominated; female employees at Burke Bros Moving Group really are turning the tide.

Jackie Bowes and Dawn Allen are heading up an increasingly successful International Department; with Jackie co-ordinating exports and Dawn co-ordinating imports. The success of department has been due in part to the pair’s maintaining of connections between Burke Bros Moving Group and international agents and of building new relationships. Under the co-ordinating of Jackie and Dawn the department has stepped up to deal with a myriad of regulation and legislation changes concerning the logistics of shipping and have also passed the independent assessment of the company’s inter-continental moving activities and has proven full compliance to the FAIMPlus standard. It’s no wonder that the all-female team are dealing with the increase of export and import international enquiries from the public and international trade colleagues!

Laura Burke, as the next generation of the Burke Bros family not only co-ordinates the vital elements of the sales function by managing sales schedules and the generating of sales documentation and the negotiating of terms best suited for the client, but also holds an integral role in controlling the company’s finances, having successfully completed recent accountancy qualifications. Furthermore, the managing of our self-storage facilities is also overseen by Laura.

Burke Bros Moving Group have a thriving Corporate Team. Emily Taylor, as Corporate Sales Co-ordinator plays a vital role in managing every stage of the process; from initial enquiry to the move itself, whether this is for an individual move or for an entire organisation. The success of our Corporate Team is a reflection of the efficient, cost-controlled and tailor-made movement of employees the team are able to offer.

Equally, the maintaining of the Burke Bros Moving Group’s brand and corporate identity is now carried out by Charlotte Crowshaw, Marketing Officer across our website, blog, marketing materials and PR.

Our female employees individually carry out a diverse range of functions and are collectively shaping the future of the company. Gary Burke, Managing Director of Burke Bros Moving Group added: “We recognise the importance of gender equality in the removals industry and work to the strengths of our employees’ capabilities, not to stereotypes.”

Literary Donation on the Move to Local Hospice
International removals and storage company, Burke Bros Moving Group, founded in Wolverhampton are donating over 5,000 books to Wolverhampton based Compton Hospice.

Burke Bros Moving Group have collected the unwanted books over several months from clearances from house moves and items that have been donated to the group. The books are to be put to good use being sold across Compton Hospice charity shops in the local area to help raise funds for the organisation.

Compton Hospice is a Wolverhampton based charity who has been supporting patients facing life-limiting illnesses, and their families, for over 30 years. Their purpose is to make a difference to people’s lives when their illness is no longer curable.

Their network of charity shops offer a vast range of second hand and new items, which are then sold to generate income to fund quality and dignified care for the patients and their families supported by the Hospice. After recent break-ins at the Compton Hospice shops, Burke Bros Moving Group have increased their efforts to try and help the charity raise much needed funding.

Gary Burke, Managing Director of Burke Bros Moving Group, was also made a non-executive director of Compton Hospice in 2015. He commented: “We were founded in the Black Country and we are proud to give back to other charitable organisations in the area that do such meaningful work. Almost everyone in this area will know someone who has benefitted from Compton Hospice and it’s nice to be able to do our bit to make sure their work continues.”

Burke Bros Moving Group will also be trying other ways to fundraise for Compton Hospice and other charities local to their Head Office in Wolverhampton throughout 2017.
