So doing this to people has been acclaimed as my specialist subject now. #Eastercon

I have a small observation to make about language.

If a person resigns saying "what I'm being asked to do is wrong", what he means is "normally I would do what is right, and this thing falls outside that".
If a person resigns saying "what I'm being asked to do is indefensible", what he means is "normally I would do whatever we could get away with, right or wrong, and this thing falls outside that".

I see that Iain Duncan Smith has resigned over "indefensible" changes to disability benefits.

I am anxiously awaiting news of Teagate.

How do I get Google Plus to FUCK OFF with the big blue tips pointing at things I already know how to use and obscuring actual content that I want to read? There's (seemingly) no way to dismiss one when it arises, and if I refresh the page (and scrooooooool down again to where I was), another one reappears somewhere else. Fuck off, tips!

I shall be at Novacon in Nottingham, 11th-13th November, with guest of honour John Meaney. Will you? Novacon is the UK's longest-established regional science fiction convention, held every autumn since 1971. http://www.novacon.org.uk/ #novacon

I want to watch this film:
Festival 2011: HYSTERIA trailer

It looks very interesting, a true story.

How The Wet Was Won.

I should write up Kay Dekker's funeral.

My background is a soup of traditions. Other than Warwick University, I'm not sure that Kay shared any of the same traditions as me, but Kay's funeral, firmly faithful as it was to Kay's traditions, played out in ways in which I found myself completely at home.

In one of my traditions (which Kay didn't share), we say "dear friends, we should love one another, since love comes from God. Anyone who claims to love God and fails to love their fellow human being has missed the point rather". Leaving God aside, I think Kay got the point entirely, never failing to love his fellows -- in fact, loving them rather better than I seem to manage.

In another of my traditions (which, as far as I know, Kay also didn't share) we say "a man rising to eminence by merit should live respected and die regretted". In the stories shared at the funeral, it became progressively more evident that Kay did both of those, more comprehensively than more-or-less anyone else I know.

Loving (and loved), respected, regretted. Kay Dekker, 1959-2011.

I have played a Game, and it hasn't put anything on my stream.

"Lamentation":
(1) a wall-covering in mediaeval Italy
(2) a Louisiana dish featuring beans
(3) an expression of sadness or loss
Any guesses?
