Trey Ratcliff saved my life

Let’s start at the beginning shall we
This photo means so much more than just pixels on the screen to me, I have been dealing with depression most of my life and as I am getting older it seems that I have less and less to offer and life has little meaning other than going to work and trying to be a good father in-between.
Sometime in October I stumbled into the stuck in customs website and my first introduction into HDR photography, I was captivated by what could be achieved. This gave me a new purpose in life my children mean everything to me but I needed something that I can call my own, something that I could create, something that gave me purpose as I felt lost and life had little meaning.
I have been using G+ for some time as well and through photography I was making new connections as I started to be a part of a group, I have met so many people in G+ and on photo walks as I am incredibly/ painfully shy – meeting people was way outside of my comfort zone, now most of these people I can call friends and this was a huge leap – finally I had a purpose and felt like I belonged.
This photo represents a merging of all those things, it was taken on my second day in New Zealand late November last year where my wife and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary and everything just came together at that point and that is why Trey Ratcliff saved my life and he did not even know it :)

Today at 7am I was sitting on a train that was just about to leave for a weekend trip into the mountains. We had debated taking the earlier train, but decided 7 was early enough. a few seconds before we were supposed to leave there was an announcement that the trip was cancelled. The earlier train had crashed into a bullet train going in the opposite direction and derailed.
It was insanity in the station. Hundred of people mobbed the counters, demanding an alternate route, even though the entire country's rail system had been stopped. Refunds and tempers flew, people screamed. Others quickly scooped up every bus ticket and rental car in the city.
While waiting my turn in line, I drew a little cartoon for one of the help desk employees that an angry man had brought to tears, apologizing for all the jerks and wishing her a nice day.

I was just thankful my wife and I hadn't taken the earlier train.

Until I found out that no one was hurt in the derailment. Then I was jealous I hadn't been on it. Because that would have been AWESOME.

Love Is

Being comfortable enough after a lifetime together to be able to sit in silence. To mirror each other without even knowing you are doing it.

Its not the right of only the young to be in love, its a testament of what love is when you are still together when you reach their age.

Being a people watcher gives me so much and sometimes it gives me peace.

All I can think about at this point is anything and everything that has to do with autumn: piles of leaves to jump in, hot apple cider with cinnamon sticks, pumpkin in just about everything, cute scarves and socks, ducking into cozy places to warm up briefly before heading back out to enjoy the kiss of brisk autumn breezes.

Summer, we can always fall in love again next year.

For now, I have a huge crush on autumn.

One of the reasons that I have autumn on my mind in a big way is that I will be leaving super early tomorrow to go to the Poconos to take photos of the fabulous fall foliage for the Poconos Tourism Board over the next few days.

If you want to follow me on my journey through the Poconos, feel free to follow along on my Instagram (@travelinglens) where I will be posting photos each day here :

Now where is that hot apple cider? :)
