Me, earlier today:

'Aren't pelicans a symbol of something? Hospitality? No, wait, that's pineapples. Unnecessarily long sea voyages? No, no, that would make sense. Exsanguination? Or is that St. Sebastian? He's the arrow saint, right?'

Yes, the 19th century would have eaten me alive.

(I should have remembered: pelicans are, of course, a symbol of self-sacrificing parenthood; according to legend they're supposed to feed their chicks with their own blood. Because apparently it didn't occur to people to observe the behavior of actual pelicans. Ever.)

The history of Dixie cups is strangely interesting.

Though I'll admit that the "Health Kups" from 1910 probably aren't the piercing critique of postmodern exceptionalism that I think they are.

My mum and I have a great working relationship: she does whatever it is before I manage to get to it, and then she does it again afterwards because she doesn't like how I did it ;)

I finally found an expressionist that I like. Of course Feininger was also a cartoonist, so maybe 'fail early, fail often' really does apply to everything.

Apparently someone thought that this song was Christmasy enough that it could be included in the Six Secular Christmas Songs playlist. As a result I was subjected to an excruciating jazz version.
This is how you jazz up Lerner and Lowe if you're so inclined folks.

A court case named: United States v. Forty-Three Gallons of Whiskey, aka the lone bright spot in all my reading on Supreme Court decisions vis-a-vis Native Americans.

So I tried to justify my subscription to the NY Times with: "Well at least the Food & Wine section is good."

Pippin: 'That's like reading Playboy for the articles...'

Of course when Merry starts arguing with her about Flash Gordon I realize I've completely lost any handle on the conversation that I might have had.
