Dutch designer Rolf (no last name, apparently) created a series of cool cross-sections of "teapots and kitschy vases" by embedding them in cement blocks and then sawing them in half: ". By cutting the same type of teapot in half, in two different ways, two totally different shapes emerge that are both very characteristic and to a certain, but different degree, recognizable for the shape of a classic teapot." Perhaps you've heard the tale of the octopus that broke out of its tank at the aquarium and walked across the room to break into another tank where it proceeded to eat other forms of sea life. That story is kind of an urban legend. It's supposedly happened at every aquarium in the world, but can't be confirmed. And experts have told me that the hard floors in an aquarium would likely seriously damage the suction pads of any octopus that tried it...

Yesterday the NPD Group issued a report on U.S. tablet sales in the U.S., from January through October of 2011. Worth noting up front is that the numbers in this report are about sales — actual tablets sold to actual customers — not “shipments” from the factory to stores and warehouses. Much-reported on is that second-place went to HP, after its fire sale on the discontinued TouchPad. What hasn’t gotten much commentary is the extraordinarily cont...

This clip from the BBC's Frozen Planet is one of the most amazing things you will ever see. "Brinicle" is a clever portmanteau for an icy finger of death that forms naturally in the very cold seawater one finds around Earth's poles. A crust of sea ice can form on top of this water, and that's the first step to making a brinicle. Here's how polar oceanographer Mark Brandon explained the process in an article on the BBC website: In winter, the ai...

In a 2007 ComicMix article, Glenn Hauman recounts the bizarre story of "Letitia Lerner, Superman's Babysitter," a comic story by Kyle Baker with Liz Glass that was spiked by DC Comics publisher and president Paul Levitz, who ordered the whole run of Elseworlds 80 Page Giant #1 spiked. The early shipments to Europe survived, though, and went viral on the Internet. When comics fans heard there was kick-ass Kyle Baker stuff to be had online, they le...

On arXiv.org, where astronomers and physicists post pre-publication research papers, the possibility of neutrinos that travel faster than the speed of light has led to dozens of new papers, including this one. So, even if FTL neutrinos end up being disproved, we at least know for certain that they will be responsible for one of the best research paper abstracts ever written. Via Alan Boyle
