In the spring of 1993, Artie Cutler's restaurant empire was booming. After the tremendous success of Carmine's Italian Family Style locations in Times Square and on the Upper West Side, Artie wanted to add a new concept to the mix. He wanted to open an authentic barbecue restaurant in the heart of Times Square. He soon found the right location at 152 West 44th Street, and began a barbecue exodus along the backroads of the South. Artie sampled copious amounts of the best barbecue across Tennessee, Kentucky, the Carolinas, Missouri, and Texas, building a BBQ portfolio that would become the fundamental components of Virgil's menu. After learning the best practices, Artie began offering products of the highest quality, right in line with the core values of the Alicart Restaurant Group.

I've been here over a dozen times but have never ventured away from the appetizers section of the menu! When out with friends, we usually pick a handful of small plates to share between all of us: Biscuits - Order alone and you'll get 4-5 and a side of the maple syrup-infused butter that others reviewers also drool over. Order with the gravy and you only get two biscuits, but a small soup-sized bowl filled with creamy gravy. With 6 or more, we usually order one of each and alternate between butter and gravy! BBQ Chicken Wings - Oh-so-delicious, juicy inside, but crispy outside, with a charred skin and the perfect amount of heat. BBQ Nachos - An interesting twist on what you'd typically expect from any bar/grill but these are topped (or should I say bottomed) with a generous helping of pulled pork beneath the towering nachos. Train Wreck Fries - You can feel yourself getting fatter as you chow these delicious (but sometimes too soft) fries, but they're certainly worth the order, so long as you have a few people to nosh on them with you. They come sprinkled with melted cheese, crumbled bacon, jalapeno peppers and drizzled with a zesty ranch. Some of my friends don't "participate" in the appetizer extravaganza, and order sandwiches or entrees. I've tried the brisket, and have found it a bit too dry on multiple occasions. The pulled pork and chicken are right on the money though! Don't expect to go bar-hopping after a dinner here - most likely, you'll find yourself waddling out the door after having loosened your pants one notch on the belt buckle. If you're feeling lethargic after your adventure and want to lounge in comfy seats and sip a proper martini or cordial, check out the Millennium hotel right across the street!

Virgils is a great place for authentic BBQ, it has a great atmosphere with good service and friendly staff. It has a allergy, vegetarian and kids menu, as well as a Braille menu. It's like coming home to family!

The bbq sandwich has an over smoked flavor and a gummy texture. The "sweet tea" is brisk, not fresh brewed. You don't get refills on the sodas. If you're looking for "real" bbq, this isn't the place to go.

Great place to eat before or after theater in the the Times Square area. Good food and drink at reasonable prices. The servers are very helpful and will guide you through the menu if needs be.

Nothing I ordered here was good. There was a definite lack of flavor on everything which was covered up by making everything spicy. Not the good kind of spicy where there is a slow burn along with tasting other flavors and the actual food, it tasted like they were just throwing a high spice level on everything to make it all burn to cover the lack of genuine flavor or being over-cooked. Dry, tough meat is never good. Baked beans should not be super spicy. Macaroni & cheese should not be spicy unless you put pieces of jalapeños in it. Anyone who rates this place highly has NO idea what good or even mediocre BBQ is. This review is a personal opinion and as such is fully protected as Free Speech under the First Amendment.

Great location, atmosphere and you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. We eat over during our layovers here at Virgil's a lot so our review is based on multiple visits. Enjoy.

We were looking for a restaurant before watching Hedwig and the Angry Inch and this place was nearby. They had a good happy hour at the bar so we got a couple of beers and a BBQ platter. The ribs were a little dry but everything else seemed okay. I don't think I would go out of my way to eat here but if you want a quick bite to eat before you see a show, it will do.
