If you wonder when you should turn off your personal computer for energy savings, here are some general guidelines to help you make that decision:
Turn off the monitor if you aren't going to use your PC for more than 20 minutes. Turn off both the CPU and monitor if you're not going to use your PC for more than 2 hours.

Mark your calendar! National Wildfire Preparedness Day is Saturday, May 7, 2016. Start working with your neighbors now to plan a workday with neighbors. Contact us (719-748-0033 or cusp@uppersouthplatte.org) if you need ideas.

If you have a fuel-burning furnace, stove, or other appliance or an attached garage, install a carbon monoxide (CO) monitor to alert you to harmful CO levels.

Make sure your address is clearly posted on your home and at driveway junctions so emergency responders can see it. Numbers should be at least 4 inches tall and reflective so they can be seen in smoke and in the dark.

When shopping for a new dishwasher, look for the ENERGY STAR label to find one that uses less water and energy than required by federal standards. They are required to use 4.25 gallons of water per cycle or less -- older dishwashers purchased before 1994 use more than 10 gallons of water per cycle.

Take some time to make a communications plan with your family in case of an emergency. Decide where you will meet up and how you will get there if you are evacuated for a wildfire or other disaster.

Energy Tip: Consider air-drying clothes on clothes lines or drying racks. Air drying is recommended by clothing manufacturers for some fabrics. Air drying not only saves energy, but in Colorado’s dry climate, can help humidify your home.
