Snow and winter conditions finally came to Lakeland. A refreshing change from the rain of recent months and very beautiful. With the correct clothing and equipment the higher fells are giving some good days out.

One day this week Keswick was dark, damp and very murky so we went high. This is what we found on the slopes of Skiddaw. Above the cloud, bright sun and warm weather. A rare treat.

There is a corner of Keswick, at Hope Park, which is a real credit to the town and especially the staff who maintain it. Formal gardens, a beck with natural flora , areas of meadow unmanaged, golf and mini golf. The park is good for birds and even has a bird feeding area where red squirrels can also be seen.
All this and just across the road from the house!

In an otherwise poor summer for weather a splash of colour can be found in marshy areas at the moment with Orchids, Bog Asphodel, Bell Heather and sphagnum mosses coming together. These pictures are from Borrowdale within a short distance of HillCrest22.

We had the pleasure to welcome Mr Mrs Bell and family (in picture below) to HillCrest recently who brought a fascinating story with them. Mr Bell's mother and father who married on16th September 1922 then came to Hillcrest on the train from Blaydon, directly after the service for their honey moon. The house at that time was a temperance hotel.
The very detailed and descriptive diary written by Mrs Bell describes a horse and carriage journey over Honister Pass on "the world famous drive to Buttermere". The view at Honister "was wild and desolate" and the descent to Buttermere "can only be done with steady horses & well built coach. The road is very rough and rocky". At Butteremere the journey included "a first class tea at the farm"
This fascinating in site into the last century describes many of the same visitor destinations we have today in Lakeland which proves the enduring quality of our area.

We did enjoy our visit to the Rannerdale bluebells this year. The cool spring has delayed many plants including bluebells which can still be seen other places around the area such as Langstrath. Be quick though the bracken is coming!

The sun shone, it was warm and the garden at HillCrest was well used buy our guests, and ourselves. Coffee, cake, wine. Nice to be on holiday!
