It’s Conflict Resolution Day tomorrow, are you up for a challenge?

Many of us continue to be shocked at saddened about conflicts we see and read about all over the world and wonder what we can do to help. Conflict Resolution Day is a great day to turn our minds to what we can do to reduce conflict or increase peace in the world around us. Every little bit helps. If you want to do your part to reduce conflict, here are some things you can do, even if you only have a few minutes!

• give someone the benefit of the doubt today
• choose not to take offense where you otherwise might today
• make a specific commitment to reach out to someone you have been in conflict with just to express your desire to resolve the conflict
• make a donation to a charity helping in a conflict zone
• think of a conflict you are in and spend five minutes trying to think about how the other person thinks/feels about the conflict
• extend a kindness where you might otherwise not
• reach out to someone you know is having a hard time and offer support

Do any of the above and then let us know. All you need to say is “I did my part to reduce conflict today” and one of our instructors will personally donate $10 (to a max of $500) to a charity (Doctors Without Borders). If 50 people respond, there will have been 50 acts to reduce conflict, $500 to MSF (Doctors Without Borders). So, let’s all Do Our Part To Resolve Conflict Today!

Today's learn@work week contest winner is Manon Pageau-Lane. Manon has won 'The Mediation Process' by Christopher Moore and a $50 Amazon gift card. This is Manon's take away from our training:

Since taking the Alternative Dispute Resolution course many years ago I became involved in my workplace union committee. I have used my skills to assist in grievance handling and as a Bargaining Committee member. Listening and keeping in mind that often we can reach resolve by learning each others goals and taking those into account has helped me gain respect on all sides of the table.

Today's learn@work week contest winner is Anita Dahlin. Anita has won the book "Thanks for the Feedback" by Sheila Heen and our online Difficult Conversations course. This is Anita's take away from our training:

A handy bit of learning that I picked up at one of the mediation workshops: Telling participants at the outset that they are free to leave at any time but please give me, as the mediator, five minutes in caucus before they go. This has helped to calm anxious or reluctant participants and simply the mention received approving comments from defendant counsel in a recent mediation.
