Intel, CPU manufacturer we all know and love, will buy Altera, makers of fine FPGAs, for $16.7 Billion. While most of the news about this deal focuses on the future of FPGAs in the datacenter, getting Altera IP into Intel fab houses is equally…

After open-sourcing Chrome for Android, is Google launching Chrome OS for Android M at Google I/O? A big Chrome OS apk on Android M to launch a Chrome OS mode on top of Android M. For Android laptops, MHL Lapdocks, Android HDMI Sticks, Android Set-top-boxes, Android TV, etc.
Launched in September 2008, Google's Chrome browser is now dominant in its share of the desktop web browser market, with approximately 1 in 4 Internet users interfacing with the web using the brows...

Interesting concept. Have to give it a try.

So: if you have a Nexus 6, you can use Google's "Fi" for $20 + $10/GB. Pay as you go, get refunds for data you don't use.  http://www.theverge.com/2015/4/22/8467433/google-launches-mobile-service

That compares favorably with T-Mobile's most basic plan ($50), although a Nexus 6 isn't cheap on its own: $200 to run on T-Mobile or Sprint, $600 unlocked.

The Google Fi service switches between wifi hotspots and T-Mobile/Sprint service, if no wifi is available. http://www.cnet.com/news/google-bursts-into-the-wireless-industry-with-project-fi/

Google says that "Project Fi automatically connects you to more than a million free, open Wi-Fi hotspots we've verified as fast and reliable." http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2015/04/project-fi.html

I have to wonder if the wifi network scanning that its Streetview cars have conducted helped them to map all of this out. As usual, data is showing up as a strategic asset.

All aside, I wonder if people will go for this. Will you?
Google is now a mobile carrier. Today the company has made official its plan to offer wireless service to owners of its Nexus 6 smartphone. It's called Project Fi, and Google is launching an early...

Did not know that.

Keep Bananas Fresh Longer

Did you know that you can keep bananas up to five days longer by simply wrapping the stems in plastic wrap?

This method prevents ethylene gas, produced naturally in the ripening process, from reaching other parts of the fruit and prematurely ripening it. Simply wrap the stems in some plastic wrap. Re-cover the bananas with the wrap after removing each banana.

The latest profile from my "How I use Android" series, featuring the one and only +Jean-Baptiste Quéru.

Check it out for an inside look at how JBQ uses Android himself -- what devices he carries, how he sets up his home screens, and what apps he can't live without.
The former lead of Google's Android Open Source Project opens up about what apps and devices he adores and how his personal home screen setup helps him stay productive.
