The Loves of Judith by Meir Shalev is out now from Schocken Books! About the book: "A woman with three loves and a son with three fathers: a universal story of passion and personal destiny by the award-winning author of A Pigeon and a Boy.

When the mysterious Judith arrives in a small agricultural village in Palestine in the 1930s, she attracts attention of three men: Moshe, a widowed farmer; Globerman, a wealthy cattle dealer; and Jacob, who loses his wife—the most beautiful woman in the village—because of his obsession with Judith, who insists on living in a cowshed rather than settling down with any of her admirers. When she gives birth to Zayde, all three suitors consider him their son, and Zayde, who tragically loses Judith, imbibes their triple wisdom and their distinct versions of his origins. As Zayde pieces together the beguiling story of the singular woman who was his mother, Meir Shalev weaves a magical novel of the joys and secrets of village life, of an unconventional family, and the unexpected fruits of love."

Flavorpill includes Chris Ware's BUILDING STORIES in its Fall 2012 books forecast: "One of our favorite graphic novelists of all time, Ware’s newest effort is what Publishers Weekly calls 'one of the year’s best arguments for the survival of print.' Indeed, Ware’s gorgeous, complex treasure chest of a book — actually 14 separate printed works that can be read in any order — tells the complex, interconnected story of a lonely woman and the building she inhabits, and demands to be handled with care, each component studied and cradled and touched. You might be touched, too."

They had to say goodbye in front of security.

But because it was a small airport, all the check-in desks and the control points were in the same hall, so he could follow her with his eyes as she set her bag on the conveyor belt, walked th
rough the metal detector, showed her boarding pass, and was led to the plane, which was standing on the runway right outside the glass door.

She kept on looking back at him and waving. On the steps up to the plane she turned one last time, laughing and crying, and laid her hand on her heart. When she’d disappeared into the plane, he waved at the little windows, but didn’t know if she could see him or not. Then the engines were started, the propellers turned, the plane began to roll, faster and faster, and took off.

His flight wasn’t leaving for another hour. He got himself a cup of coffee and a newspaper and sat down on a bench. Since they had met, he hadn’t read a newspaper anymore or sat alone over a cup of coffee. After a quarter of an hour, during which he still hadn’t read a single line or swallowed a single mouthful, he thought, I’ve forgotten how to be alone. It was a thought he liked.
