"Although Huffington Post, BuzzFeed and Ezra Klein’s new Vox.com generate considerable attention as representatives of the digital media future, they are in fact, not typical representatives of the native digital news landscape. "

I traveled from the Washington area to Steve's Garage to have an inspection conducted on a car I recently bought in Virginia. I was looking for an unbiased automotive expert who wouldn't try to stick me with a bunch of expensive, unnecessary repairs simply to profit from my own lack of knowledge. I chose Steve based on the reviews here, on Yelp and on an automotive forum. I tried calling Steve ahead of time, but got his answering machine. Rather than leave a message, I decided to risk driving up there -- and besides I wanted to put the car on the road to give it a shakedown. I also knew from all of the reviews that Steve runs a small shop and was likely out doing an inspection. When I arrived he was pulling off to do a road test but flagged me down when he saw me going into his office. He told me he had a couple of customers ahead of me but would be glad to fit me in. I went off and killed some time and eventually came back and waited. He was able to take me early because of a no-show. I gave him my keys and he went to work. Steve is clearly focused on what he's doing and has this down to a science. He took my car for a road test and then brought it back to the garage, put it on the rack and set about doing the job at hand. I kept peeping from his office into the work bay to see what he was doing, and Steve was giving the car a thorough inspection, poking into recesses, taking off the wheels and examining the brakes, etc. He was definitely paying attention to the details. My car had a clean bill of health and we spent several minutes discussing areas that I thought might have been cause for concern, but he was quickly able to alleviate any worries I had based on his inspection. I found Steve to be informative and personable, and he definitely knows his business (he also seems to be a classical music fan because his shop is filled with the music while he works; I liked the contrast). I enthusiastically recommend his work. It is a small shop, so you may be in for a wait, but that's also a testament to the fact that Steve seems to attract a lot of business from all over. It was reassuring to know that he didn't have any reason not to give me a fair and accurate inspection because he wasn't trying to make an extra dollar by doing repair work, too.
