Death by firing squad? How America executes inmates on death row.
Death row convicts in the United States have gasped for air, have been strangled accidentally and have even been decapitated when executions go awry. Recent problems with lethal injection, the nation’s most popular method of execution, have raised questions about how states execute condemned prisoners, which now number more than 3,000.

Looking forward to the next Foo Fighters album. I don't know how Dave Grohl does so much.

The Pac-12 conference may have the same lineup as last year, but there's been a mini-quake of movement among other Division 1 conferences in NCAA men's college basketball. One of the biggest changes is the Atlantic Coast Conference has added two former Big East powerhouses, Pittsburgh and Syracuse. But the Big East has gained Butler, Xavier and Creighton. Our graphic illustrates the realignment for 2013-14

Turns out that many "active" fund managers don't make you more money. If fact, you would have made more over the past 10 years investing in indexed funds.

We posted a new project today at the Los Angeles Times using three.js to create an interactive 3D graphic of satellites in orbit. Cool experiment in HTML5 Canvas by Armand Emamdjomeh
Hughes engineer Harold Rosen's team overcame technical and political hurdles to send the Syncom communications satellite into orbit 50 years ago.

Nobel prize in physics awarded to physicists Peter Higgs and Francois Englert. They discovered the Higgs particle using a "large hadron collider." If you don't know what that is, learn all about it with this graphic: http://graphics.latimes.com/towergraphic-large-hadron-collider/
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a particle accelerator that simulates conditions like those in the first moments after the Big Bang. Scientists at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, use the LHC to probe subatomic particles as they try to complete their picture of the universe. Read more: Nobel Prize in physics goes to Higgs and Englert.

Whew! It was a lot of work but Lorena Iñiguez Elebee and I built a data visualization of the Dodger's performance throughout the season to illustrate how the NL West was won.

Now I just need a quick swim...

Story
Introduction
I teach at the Knight Digital Media Center, which is housed in the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. I'm a former graphics director for print, web and TV news with nearly 20 years in journalism.

I'm also a big geek and enjoy playing with HTML, CSS and Javascript. I especially like data visualization and site design.

My "To learn" list is long and my available time is short. So I'm designing an application that adds an extra hour to every day.
