What Can an Upper Endoscopy Tell You?

If you've had troublesome symptoms (such as constant heartburn), your doctor may order an upper endoscopy to see what's going on inside your body. During this test, your doctor will get a better look at the inside of your upper GI tract. This test is both diagnostic (helps your doctor diagnose you) and a treatment (allows your doctor to treat specific conditions or take biopsies).

IBS and IBD: What's the Difference?

Although the terms IBS and IBD are sometimes used interchangeably, they are not the same condition. Irritable bowel syndrome causes gas pains, cramping, or diarrhea/constipation, but the cause is often unknown. These symptoms are often triggered by events (such as stress), but a specific disease does not cause them. On the other hand, irritable bowel disease produces symptoms that are caused by specific conditions, including Crohn's disease, colitis, and enteritis.

If you have abdominal pain, gas, or changes to your bowel movements, check in with your gastroenterologist to determine the cause of your symptoms.
