More than a meal, a culinary adventure. The chefs at work here seem to be on a mission to reinvent gastronomy from the ground up, putting together novel flavor and texture combinations. None of the dishes we tried disappointed. The so called "provisions" specials keep being suggested to you as they come out of the kitchen, in addition to the standard menu. Our seats were at the bar overlooking the kitchen and we loved the experience. A restaurant that's definitely worth a special trip and will take you places.

Over the TOP! We waited in line - starting at 4:50, and still were the LAST to get in. Couldn't get a table, so was offered the chefs counter. We almost passed - didn't want to stand all evening (in heels), but we decided to go for it. The food was so good, didn't need to sit. We were all jumping up and down sharing bites, and sipping amazing wines as well. The burrata, the quail, the ice cream sandwich, well EVERYTHING just was so unique. Now my favorite restaurant in the city. If only they could expand AGAIN. truly a gem. And all the people are so nice; owners are awesome .

First this place is quite impossible to obtain decent day of reservations. The key is to reserve in advance for a large group (6-8) and email the restaurant at least 6 weeks in advance. After making reservations in January for a March dinner, me and 7 other friends finally had dinner here. The large group dinners have pre set menus and includes 15 dishes for about $90pp after tax/tip. It is served family style with enough to go around. Our waitress informed us that the pre set menu consists of all the favorite items from the regular list. My favorite dishes from the meal were the crab, kimchi yuba with smoked egg - which was a tofu bean salad with crab and kimchi and the fried CA state bird (the dish this place is known for) - sweet crunchy exterior and moist quail. I was surprised on the number of dishes that had Asian influences in it. Many of the items had sesame and/or umami flavoring. I recommend trying it for the experience and the value of the meal, but there was nothing that blew me away that I would come back soon.

The experience and service was great! American dimsum, essentially, served by a knowledgeable and amiable staff. The tastes were unique and some items were absolutely delicious. The bartender introduced me to a French wine made of blue fruits based on what I told her about my usual selections – it was spot on. Must try: - Their house special, the state bird - Their desserts - This dumpling in a mini-bowl served with fresh hot broth; so good. Another thing to note were the variations of temperatures of the food. Some were hot some were room temp, and others were cool. That was sort of neat because typically with Chinese dimsum, everything is hot OR cold (jelly fish). Dimsum style in the sense they come around with the food on platters and you can see it before actually taking it. Price is on the steep side but this place is a must try!

I wish that for only the rarest, most deserving locations, Google reviews would allow me to give more than just 5 stars. I have never been more satisfied with a meal from beginning to end - and that's saying a ton for someone as picky as I am. I wish I could tell you what my favorites were, but I'd have to list 17 of the 18 tapas we got to try (we were in a group of 8 so we got the State Bird equivalent of the chef's menu). Probably better that way since the choices were all the most talked about on yelp and I wouldn't have been able to decide otherwise. WELL worth the 6 week reservation wait or the couple of hour long wait for non-reservations.

My first review, and it's a winner. Girlfriend and I managed to get a reservation for her birthday and were blown away by the food. For a place that just received a Michelin star, I had very high expectations and everyone was met. I love that they serve small dishes, the two of us got to sample 12 different dishes, each one with unique and bold flavors. My favorite was the cold smoked trout porridge with a 60 degree egg. And you can split desserts in half, so we got to taste two which was perfect for $8. Not sure what to expect when the bill came, couldn't believe that it was $120, which included the corkage for the champagne we brought in. This quality of food, in San Francisco, we would have happily paid twice as much. Can't wait to go back with a larger group to share the experience.
