Defying gravity, for real!

ZeroN is a physical and digital interaction element that floats and moves in space by computer-controlled magnetic levitation. Invented by the MIT Media Lab.

There is a very interesting project we'd like to tell you about. It's an open animation movie called Tube. The story is inspired by the Gilgamesh poem, and the movie itself is created with free tools, such as Blender (3D), MyPaint (concept art) and, as you might guess, GIMP (various editing).

The "open" bit means that all sources (models, textures, scenes etc.) will be available for people to study under a Creative Commons license.

The project is headed by some really awesome people, Bassam Kurdali and Fateh Slavitskaya, and supervised by Chris Perry (formerly of Pixar and Rhythm & Hues), with a lot of talented artists participating.

Recently they launched a kickstarter to fund the next stage of the project. They quickly exceeded the initial $22K goal, and they'd like to get the complete funding which is a $50K goal, but they are currently only at ca $33K with 5 days left for the campaign.

If you are interested in the storytelling aspect of the project, you can read a fresh-off-the press interview with founders of the movie (http://bit.ly/JBX1Xh).

If you are more interested in the tools they use and create, you can watch a video (http://kck.st/JZEQpO) that the director of the movie recorded especially for the Libre Graphics Meeting conference.

You can also follow their progress in the project's blog at http://urchn.org.

If you find their ideas appealing, and/or if you are interested to have a go at the project source materials to learn more about state of the art 3D animation, we encourage you to donate! :)
