EXPEDITION LOG - Great Barrier Reef & Coral Sea Survey 5 (Day 4)

Often we have a "fish of the day" but yesterday we may have found the "fish of the expedition". The dive operators in the area have named this guy Greg, though for what reason we are not sure. What we do know is that this is one of the friendliest fish we've come across in the sea.

Greg is a Maori Wrasse (aka Humphead or Napoleon Wrasse) who lives in this area and swims with lucky divers that visit the Agincourt pontoon. Photographer Lynton Burger captured this shot of Greg displaying for the camera.

I couldn't decide whether this Gelada was saying "...ewwwwwwwwwwwww!"
or "I am a waaaaay better kisser than you, you far-less-hairy-but-still-somewhat-attractive primate. Don't make me come over there and arm wrestle you"

Yeah, this time, I'm going with the former.

GIANT BUTTRESS TREE ROOTS in Costa Rica

Buttress roots (stilt roots or prop roots) are large roots on all sides of a big bottomed tree or shallowly rooted tree. Typically, they are found in nutrient-poor rainforest soils and do not penetrate to deeper layers.
