The Agreement by 196 countries regarding climate change is a BIG step forward, committing them to find ways to slow the warming starting in 2020. We should applaud their efforts.
But it needs to be recognized that a) the emissions reductions identified do not even come close to meeting the stated temperature targets, and b) even if the temperature targets were met, that the effects of the warming will be substantially worse than what we are already seeing. In particular, from my area of expertise, the melting of glaciers and the ice sheets on Greenland and Antarctica will continue to accelerate, raising global sea level.
As I explain in the post linked below, this Agreement is not a reason to relax or to set aside the need to ADAPT to rising sea level and the other effects.
