Has anyone used AAMS Auto Mastering software? I downloaded it the other day since it is donationware now, but haven't had time to try it out yet.

What was your experience/opinion?

I've used it in the past with mixed results. You'll either get a pretty decent final product, or it will totally make a pile of mud. My best advice would be to experiment a bit with the different presets and don't let the genre titles fool you. They're simply guidelines. You may find a Jazz preset works great with a rock mix etc.... I'm glad to see that it's now donationware and compatible with Windows 7 64bit. I'd say it's worth throwing the developer a few bucks as it can get you a good sound in a shorter amount of time.

Topic for discussion for us hobbyist types:

How do you find a publisher to sell your tunes?

I'm not talking about putting your songs on ReverbNation or some similar site and paying the extra bit of dough to have it show up on iTunes/Amazon/etc.  I'm wondering more along the lines of selling tunes that other artists will record and release on their own albums.  The hired gun songwriter so to speak.

Let's assume there is a catalog of material worthy of being sold and the recordings are of a high enough quality to get through the door.  I'm focusing on the part where you get the songs into the hands of someone who can shop them to other bands/artists to get paid for them.

Hello everyone.  I've been seeing a lot of posts flagged by G+ as possible spam lately.  I've simply been clicking the "Remove" button so far.  But if things get worse, I'll start using the stronger option to "Remove, report and ban"

Let's try to keep self promotion to a minimum if we can.  Obviously, I don't mind if you post links to your tunes and use the "Critique My Recording" option.  This community is for those of us who honestly want help and tips or to share our experience with others.  But if all you are here to do is drive traffic to your personal site, I gotta call foul on that.

W00t!  iRig is finally for Android!  Now if only I weren't unemployed, I would buy this!

Next step (according to me) is to get things like the iRig guitar interface and Amplitube working with Android.  That would make me even happier.

(Not-so)Pro-tip!!!

When setting up your gear to record, make sure all your connections are seated properly.  This will save you damned near a half hour of wiggling things to find the apparent faulty cable that turned out to just not be pushed in all the way.

Not that that's what happened to me.... just now....

I'm certainly in no position to buy one in the near (or even reasonably far out) future, but I go online from time to time and price out a good 88-key full hammer action MIDI controller (controller only, not a workstation) and come away feeling like I must be missing something.  There are only about 3 or 4 decent looking ones out there.

Anyone else found anything good?

The best I seem to find is the Akai MPK88.  Everything else seems to be either lacking in a LOT of features or is a full workstation.

I have an M-Audio axiom25; I've gotten a lot of good usage out of it.  I use it for simple piano/key work,  FX, or drum/percussion  using the pads.  I mainly use it when I'm mixing and rarely for anything live. Every now and then I kind of wish I'd gotten one of the larger ones, but overall I've been really happy with it.

Personal Gear Reviews  -

Saw this app over on +Recording and Mix Engineers and decided to do a little digging.  There is a demo version which I am going to test out on my wife's (sadly underused) Xoom tablet.  So far it looks like you can only do one recording source at a time, but the dev also has a multi-track recording app as well, so I imagine that integration between the two would be in the plans for the future.

If that happens, there will finally be a viable multi-track recording solution for Android users. (Like myself!)
USB audio recording and playback finally possible on Android 3.1 or higher!...

Curses!  I actually have free time tonight, while I am bored at work, to test this out and what did I forget to bring with me?  The microUSB adapter for the Xoom!  I have the app demos, the tablet, my audio interface and a mic, but no way to connect them to the tablet.  Argh.  Oh well, tomorrow is another day.

#‎musicgear‬
Minor but significant success today!
Since we got the Xmas tree put away at the first of the year, I've been working on setting my music gear up again in the living room. I also got a cool MIDI footswitch last Father's Day for my virtual guitar rig on my PC that I've never had the chance to actually use yet. I really like a program called Amplitube, but apparently the footswitch (a Behringer FCB1010 for those interested) would NOT talk to Amplitube at all! It's been very frustrating because I don't have lots of time to sit and troubleshoot problems like this. I only get a half hour here and there once or twice a week.
So troubleshooting has been slooooow and laborious. I finally determined that part of the problem was my own fault. I had both MIDI cables plugged in to the footswitch and apparently the footswitch repeats any MIDI info from the IN to the OUT port. I was creating an endless loop with every switch press. No wonder Amplitube didn't respond. It was getting nothing but garbage data repeating over and over and over. Unplugged the MIDI IN line and viola! Data started to look normal. Another few minutes of fiddling with settings and I finally can get Amplitube to see MIDI from the FCB!!
I'm very relieved by this and had to geek out for a minute and share.

I looked into the UNO chip, but ultimately settled on the competing EurekaPROM.

I wanted to use it with FrettedSynth's FreeAmp2, rather than Amplitube, but once I had it installed I was up and running in less than 5 minutes.

Anyone else taking the Berklee online courses?  I just had to unenroll myself from the Intro to Music Production class.  We're three weeks into it now and I haven't had time for a single assignment yet.

I'm disappointed.  But hopefully, the next time they offer it, I'll be able to commit.

If anyone else is taking the class (or one of the others) I'd love to hear what your thoughts are about it.

Found this page a couple of weeks ago and signed up for his "mini-course."  Some decent info.  He seems to get much more in depth than the standard "just make it louder" rhetoric you see tossed about.

Video is about 30min. long but worth the time to watch IMHO.

On New Year's Day, I did a full-inventory mic shootout (guess I forgot to share with this community, I'll go find it and reshare).  A week later I did a singer-songwriter thing with voice and accordion.
