It's always fascinating to see how it all started
In May 1949—64 years ago today—the “Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator” (EDSAC) became the world’s first general purpose stored program computer to enter regular service. EDSAC is noteworthy because it wasn't intended to be at the cutting edge of engineering; instead, its creator wanted it to be used as a practical tool by a wide range of researchers. EDSAC transformed scientific research at the University of Cambridge by making it possible to speedily tackle analyses of previously impractical scale, across disciplines as varied as astronomy, economics, biology and more.

Little remains physically of EDSAC today, but team of U.K. volunteers have started a project to construct a working replica of the original, and we're supporting this project. Read more about EDSAC and its contributions to computing past and present on our blog: http://goo.gl/7fGdZ

The clouds and star (well planet actually) added to the slightly surreal quality of this early morning view.
