"Proud Mary" could have been better, but it was great seeing Taraji P. Henson kick some serious butt!

A post about Christy Marx's "Jem and the Holograms," one of the most amazing gems of 1980's animation, breaking barriers, bringing inclusivity, and delivering womanhood characterization beyond the Hasbro doll line.

I really, really enjoyed Brown Girl Begins! Aesthetically, it's a profoundly beautiful piece of surrealist, afrofuturistic art, with gorgeous talented actors of... all hues (lit well), playing these valiant roles. Having a dark skinned black actress be the skilled herbalist healer, the reluctant heroine, the desired lead was breathtaking awe, And it's strong use of metaphor and history is quite brilliant! Hopefully, author Nalo Hopkinson appreciates her rendered dystopian science fiction tales as much as the audience did. Thank you Sharon Lewis for passionately committing to telling this story that has us in the future for once-- leading and saving it. #DirectedByWomen

Based on Muriel Barbery's "The Elegance of the Hedgehog," I truly enjoyed Mona Achache's lovely charmer about a little girl's obsession with suicide and her unlikely relationship with the "hermit-y," chocolate, book loving Ms. Michel and a distinguished, very sophisticated Japanese businessman. It is wonderful, humorous, and sad all at once. Everyone should see The Hedgehog Movie if possible. #DIrectedByWomen

Only five episodes available to watch on YouTube and Hermione Granger and the Quarter Life Crisis has been a funny, delightful binge. Produced by women, Hermione is given a female inner circle (including a close cousin who doesn't know the big magical secret), a chance to breathe outside of her male best buds, and be herself in Los Angeles-- far, far away from London. Plus, she is a beautiful, fierce black girl with a voice, who is on a journey of figuring her life out, one friend's couch at a time.... #DirectedByWomen

September is Directed by Women Month! I'll be starting off the week by revisiting old posts about Dee Rees' "Pariah" and Mona Achache’s "Hedgehog," and writing about Eliyannah Amirah Yisrael's Hermione Granger and the Quarter Life Crisis, Victoria Muhaney's Yelling to the Sky, and Celine Sciamma's BANDE DE FILLES. #DirectedByWomen
