Hello, everyone. I am a licensed psychologist in private practice in southern California. I specialize in anger management and couples therapy. I am a late career person who tried to retire, but discovered I wasn't ready yet, so I am back in the fold, so to speak. Even though I am 72 years old, I feel I am very much still in the process of learning, as our field keeps advancing. I currently am writing a new book titled Anger Management for the Twenty First Century Couple. I enjoy reading all your posts and look forward to contributing from time to time.

Trying to communicate with guarded, defensive people is like trying to kiss a porcupine. Very dangerous, often painful, and frequently not fruitful - and they never get the message anyhow. Try to be more open to what your partner is telling you rather than spending all that energy deflecting it.

Learning to #communicate often involves using the language your partner will understand and respond to.  Learning and using this "love" language is a much better approach than constantly complaining that your partner never hears you. For instance, being a good parent to a step-child may make your partner feel much more loved than just telling them you love them.

Remember that you often cannot control what happens to you, but you can indeed control how you perceive it, and how deal with it. Victims see themselves as powerless; others see themselves as responsible for finding a way to deal with the adversity. More at http://www.angercoach.com

Hope anger control is going well for everyone so far in 2014. Paradoxically, sometimes the best way to control it is to express it more often, but in a certain manner that communicates how you feel in a healthy, productive way.  Avoiding anger and stuffing it "under the rug" often has disastrous consequences down the road. Be honest with your feelings. Going underground is for termites, not humans.  Local people - remember anger class tonight in Long Beach, 7:30-8:30pm.
