The New York City public dataset contains all the 311 complaints made since 2010. Let’s see how the city has improved — and gotten worse — over the past 6 years.

How the big search company lets you use their computers to do your own stuff

Inspired by XKCD's "Thing Explainer", here’s the Google Cloud Platform described with just the 1,000 most commonly used words.

Google’s Cloud Platform: Described without… help from marketing

Sadly, the Wikipedia entry for GCP is garbage, and while the official docs are pretty good, the marketing-dust sprinkled on them gives me a toothache.

For my own reference, I pulled together an objective description for each of the services available on GCP. Thought they might be useful, so here they are.

What are the GCP Services?

I'm working on a theory that you can predict the next up-and-coming area of New York City by analyzing where there are more rat complaints, but not more rats.

Check out this #TILwBQ post where I import and analyze public data on NYC rats using #BigQuery.

There's nothing like the unfiltered, pre-constructive feedback of someone in Developer Relations looking at a dev offering the 1st time.

When feedback goes to product / engineering it's measured and constructive. But the initial reaction, while the WTFs/min are counted, is glorious.

Know that when a Developer Advocate calmly says, "Yeah. I totally understand how that's frustrating. I'll make sure the team really understands." or telling product / eng, "I understand the trade-offs, but this is really going to have a negative impact on the developer experience."

Inside we're 😱

Because we care. A lot. Probably too much. And in the privacy of our cubicles and team chats you get those 1st reactions. And it's magnificent.

Warm temperatures mean more Citi Bike rides, but does snow cause New York City manhole covers to go missing? Do noise complaints drop when wind speeds rise?

Using BigQuery's CORR function, we can explore correlations between temperature, snow, wind, and New York City's public data to learn how changes in the weather effect the city — including everything from car accidents, illegal parking, rats, trees, and noise complaints.
