Professional Android 4th Edition is here!

In 10 years since the 1st edition, Android has added 14 desserts, a new IDE, and a new 1st-class language. The 4E has a 3rd cover design, 500 more pages, and the fantastic +Ian Lake as a new co-author!

Professional Android 4E is based on Android Studio 3.1 and targets API Level 28/29. It covers the fundamentals of Android dev and explores everything from Android Architecture Components (Job Schedule/Live Data/Room), to material design, Google Play services, and Firebase.

All the code snippets and projects from the book are available to download at Wrox.com and from our GitHub repo. The code samples currently use Java syntax, but we plan to make them available in Kotlin as well.

We hope you find the book useful -- let us know what you build!

I posted this on Twitter earlier today. Reposting here where I've spent a lot of time hanging out with follow Android developers.

10 years ago today, I wrote this guest post on Google Blogoscoped: "How to Program Google Android" in which I detailed the development process for my first Android application. This blog post changed my life.

A day later I connected w/ +Chris Webb from Wrox . He'd emailed me, "Would be interested in speaking with you about your thoughts on the SDK. We are considering it for a book." I assumed it was a scam.

It was not a scam. Exactly a year later, the first copies of my first book arrived at my flat in London. While writing the book, I got to know the +Android Developers DevRel team.

By March the next year, I was on the Android DevRel team 😮 I spent 2 amazing years traveling Europe, explaining what "Android" was and why mobile apps would be a Big Deal.

Now I live in California, am still with Google , and Android has grown to over 2 billion monthly active devices.

10 years on, it's amazing to look back to that 1st innocuous post about a mobile OS that wouldn't be available on a real 📱 for a year. It’s been quite a ride 😀

Nearly time for #BuildOutShow, a new Google Cloud YouTube series, where Colt McAnlis and I present competing system architectures for fake products.

When we're done, you get to decide who solved the problem better, by posting a comment to the video on YouTube.

We launched a new set of Public Datasets on BigQuery featuring the City by the Bay: San Francisco!

It includes SFPD incidents, SFFD service callouts, 311 complaints, street trees, and Bay Area Bike Share rides and stations -- all updated daily.

Learn where not to park your car, the "best" place for your house to catch fire, and lots, lots more.
