The tricks that artists use to learn

This was done six years ago when I was just beginning how to to learn anything. I didn't know anything when I did this. I could not have drawn myself out of a wet paper bag. I still can't draw freehand very well, but I don't practice enough by half. I barely practice. I should practice 2 hours a day and I don't manage 2 hours every six months. I'm ashamed of myself, to be honest.

This was done using the grid method which is a very very simple way to teach artists how to see. Trying to draw something like this, representationally, without knowing anything, would seem like an insurmountable task. Impossible.

But lay a grid over the original photo and suddenly it becomes only a matter of copying tiny boxes. Box by box, an image appears. This was drawn and painted using that method, when I could only draw basic stick figures freehand.

Admittedly I have a very good eye for referencing. I can adjust what I see to only what I 'need' to see to do the referencing. But this is a tool, quite often only whispered about, that helps almost every artist that I've known, at the beginning.

In the long run, it becomes timely to do things in such a manner. If you're a working illustrator there are often demands on your time and deadlines to make. Relying on this tool for much longer than your apprenticeship would be folly.

But it's a great tool to help a beginner see and suddenly the world of learning to draw becomes all that much more possible.
