I'm excited about the impact that +Franz Och will have at GRAIL as our head of Data Science.

Given the massive amounts of rich data that we'll be dealing with in our mission to "detect cancer early, when it can be cured" -- machine learning/ deep learning will play a cornerstone role. Franz is an innovator (father of +Google Translate, based on large-scale machine learning), and one of the best in the world to get big data to confess its secrets.

If you know any machine learning superstars that might want to work on saving lives with Franz, please let me know (or apply at http://www.grailbio.com/join-the-team).

I was honored to give the Commencement speech -- "Find a Better Way" -- at my alma mater, the University of Illinois, earlier today. HUGE thanks to the Class of 2016 for giving me such a warm welcome, and birthday serenade! :)

Here's the video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/pVAnC_-zF_E (it's a little rough due to ~30mph gusty winds!)

I'm saddened +Laura Huber couldn't be there to share the experience, but having my family there and more family (Hi Dad!) & friends watching the livestream was wonderful & loving support.

A new chapter begins... I'm very excited to announce I'll be joining Grail (http://www.grailbio.com/) as its CEO.

Grail's mission is to detect cancer at an early-stage, when it can be cured. Grail is building on "ultra-deep sequencing" technology and big data/machine learning to create a highly-accurate pan-cancer blood test. We'll be working on one of the most important problems in the world, and plan to build the best team in the world to make it happen.

My work at Grail is dedicated in remembrance of my wife, Laura. She fought an incredibly brave battle with her cancer, but it was ultimately a losing battle since it was diagnosed so late (at stage 4). If Grail had existed before, and caught her cancer earlier, it's very possible she'd still be with us today. Things don't "happen for a reason", but you can find purpose and meaning in things that do happen. When Grail succeeds, hopefully many, many people and their loved ones can be spared the cancer experience Laura endured.

I'd like to thank my amazing colleagues at Google (/Alphabet) over the last 12 years. I'm honored and humbled by the opportunity to have worked with you, with an extra-special dedication to my teams in Ads, Apps, Maps, and [x]. Google has been like family; I'll miss you dearly.

Congratulations +Laszlo Bock on the official launch of Work Rules!  It has my vote for "Business Book of the Year."  :)

Get it at www.workrules.net #workrules
We spend more time working than doing anything else in life. Yet for too many people, the experience of work is dehumanizing, demoralizing, and overly focused on the bottom line.

I don’t think it has to be this way, and I’m willing to bet you don’t either.

At Google, we’ve learned a ton about what makes for an enjoyable and productive workplace. We’re not alone – lots of other companies, ranging from Bangladeshi garment factories to Brooklyn delis, as well as academic researchers, have learned the same simple truth: there are straightforward things we can do to make work better.

My new book, Work Rules!, is an attempt to bring this together and offer you practical tools to improve work, no matter what you do.

If that resonates with you, I invite you to grab a book and join me on this journey toward better work for all. Copies are now available at www.workrules.net #workrules #google #work #hr

Very well done, +Laszlo Bock! (p.s. I recommend [Add to circles])

WORK RULES! named as Inc. "best business book" of 2015, and great quote:

"Larry and Sergey had ambitions beyond developing a great search engine. They started out knowing how they wanted people to be treated. Quixotic as it sounds, they both wanted to create a company where work was meaningful, employees felt free to pursue their passions, and people and their families were cared for. Many of the most meaningful, beloved, and effective people practices at Google sprouted from seeds planted by Larry and Sergey. Our weekly all-employee meetings started when 'all' of us amounted to just a handful of people, and continue to this day even though we're now the size of a respectable city."
Inc. not only named my WORK RULES! "best business book" of 2015, but also included their favorite quote.  Very cool!
