So I caved and gave in to one of the craziest food fads ever.
Have you been seeing the crazy coffee concoction all over the internet that combines black coffee with coconut oil and butter?  I know, I know.  It's CRAZY! Who in the world would ever think of such a thing?  I suspect the coconut oil industry - lol.  I mean, it's so bizarre and weird and intriguing that you just have to head into the kitchen to give it a try.  At least that's what I was thinking.   So I did just that.  I made it and...

Individual Cherry Crumbles
3.14 was Pi Day - did you bake a pie?  I made this cherry pie with lattice crust to bring to a church lunch.  I also made these mini cherry crumbles for us to eat here at home.  Crumbles are kind of like pie, right?  I think they're actually a little easier to make than pie.  Plus making them gave me a chance to use a single can of Oregan red tart cherries that had been taking up valuable space in my pantry.   Individual Cherry Crumb...

Ready in about 10 minutes!
Here's a super delicious shrimp dish that you can have on the table in about 10 minutes.  The recipe takes advantage of dried herbs, but you can certainly use fresh if you have them.  Be sure to serve with plenty of crusty bread to sop up all the flavorful sauce. Garlic Butter Shrimp Printable Recipe Ingredients * 2 tablespoons canola oil * 1/2 pound 34-40 count peeled, tail-on shrimp, thawed and patted dry * 1/4 t...

Hamantaschen photo tutorial
Welcome to week 13 of the Alpha Bakers bake-a-long, an online project where a group of food bloggers bake our way through The Baking Bible by Rose Levy Beranbaum.  Most of the recipes made during this project will not be shared, but I will post my commentary followed by a full photo tutorial. This week's selection - Hamantaschen - a triangular, filled pastry which is traditionally served on the Jewish festival of Purim.  Rose's recipe ...

instant gratification!
I had one piece of pie left and needed just a small amount of whipped cream so I grabbed a jar and made some.  Here's how. Pour about 2 tablespoons of heave cream in a jar.  Pick a jar that will allow you to shake the cream vigorously with room for it to move around, but don't pick a jar that's too big. Then add about 1/2 teaspoon confectioners sugar. And about 1/4 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract. Then put the lid on and start ...

I've been pretty busy this week, but I wanted to take a moment to share these jello eggs with you guys.  I came up with the idea of making them when my kids were young.  I usually make them at Easter time, but they're fun any time of the year.  I start with these egg molds.  I got mine at the grocery store about 15 years ago, but you can find them online and occasionally in thrift shops.  I've also seen molds that make egg halves ava...

Happy St. Patrick's
Bailey's Irish Cream and Pistachio Fudge - ButterYum Time of this month's Crazy Cooking Challenge - FUDGE!!  My selection, Bailey's Irish Cream and Pistachio Fudge.  It's so good, and it's so easy to make - it takes about 10 minutes from start to finish, requires only 4 ingredients, and there's no need to use a candy thermometer.  I found the recipe on the blog Eat Good 4 Life by Miryam.  She also has a tempting Kahlua and Da...

My secret for the easiest way to peel garlic revealed.
Today I want to share with you the absolute EASIEST way to peel garlic cloves.  You're going to love this one, and no sticky fingers, no stinky cutting board, and no potentially dangerous knife smashing.   Grab a couple of garlic cloves and an empty jar with a lid.  Place the cloves in the jar, cover lightly with the lid, and shake-shake-shake for 15-20 seconds until the papery skins magically fall away from the garlic cloves.  Ta-Da...

making college girl's favorite pasta dish for dinner tonight
Tagliatelle with Kielbases Onions and Tomatoes - ButterYum I'm so happy to be able to share this accidental family-favorite pasta dish with you.  It came about in the usual way - I had no idea what to make for dinner, but I needed to get something on the table and the only thing I had in the fridge was a ring of Kielbasa.  I honestly didn't expect us to like it as much as we did, but we devoured it so I quickly jotted down the recipe...
