TIME TO TURN THE TABLES OVER?

There came a time when Jesus was neither gentle nor mild, but was flailing a whip and turning over the tables in the temple. To me, we could be living in a time such as this, a time when systems of mendacity, hypocrisy, and lies abound. I remember Big Daddy hollering at Brick in “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” and Brick yelling back at his father, “Mendacity is the system we live in.”

Brick and Big Daddy are echoing the Bible, which warns about lies that tickle our ears and lure us into deception and foolishness. But, Isaiah says, “God will sift the nations with the sieve of futility.” And God Himself says, “Woe to the rebellious, who take counsel, but not of Me, who devise plans, but not of My Spirit.”

This is why Jesus stormed the temple. He showed that God can and will smack down those who go against Him. “This is a rebellious people,” God says, “lying children, children who will not hear the law of the Lord.” Instead, we are falling for their false narratives, repeated by the power-mongers, over and over again, until our brains are soaked: washed, but not clean.

All I can do is all I can do which, for me, is prayer. Playing God is not okay with God, but seeking knowledge of His Will is plenty okay. So, I hear Him saying, "Be patient and be wise." And so, this post, today's question, is prayer. “Can the tables of the temple be turned over, once again?” For me, His answer is yes. Chime in if you care to share.

THE HOUND OF HEAVEN?

For me, Bible stories portray God’s pursuit of humankind from the time of The Fall straight through the Revelation of everything ending up “as it was in the beginning.” The tales became truths to me, capturing things I could not otherwise comprehend. Through these many stories, my eyes were gently opened to see GOD as the Hound of Heaven, who was nipping at my heels just like He had chased down people in the Bible. GOD is DOG spelled backwards. and He is a Hunting Hound! His goal is to retrieve people (including me) from running with the pack. Think lemmings.

It took an enormous STOP sign before I ever saw my need to STOP. Divine Intervention brought me to a screeching halt and Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Learn from from Me, for My yoke is easy, and My burden is Light.” So, I did, and when I turned round right, I discovered the bigness and kindness and comfort of GOD, right there, waiting to love me, help me, and be with me constantly and never not. I am so grateful to have been retrieved and returned to GOD.

The little kid in this photograph is much larger than I am, and GOD is much bigger than this DOG, but you get the idea. Chime in if you care to share!

STARTING TO PECK?

Coming into the Light started for me when it broke through my hard shell and began to pour in like Morning. I had just begun to peck when in a Person came, singing to me and with me. It was just like the guy from a Donovan song that, for some reason, I decided to dust off yesterday afternoon. The song is called “The Hurdy Gurdy Man” and I quickly discovered why it had been brought back to my remembrance. It is an amazing capture of what happened to me when I was gazing at the sea thirty-five years ago in Newport, Rhode Island:

Thrown like a star in my vast sleep, I open my eyes to take a peep, to find that I was by the sea, gazing with tranquility. Twas then when The Hurdy Gurdy Man came singing songs of love. That’s when The Hurdy Gurdy Man came singing songs of love.

Histories of ages past, unenlightened shadows cast, down through all eternity, the crying of humanity. ‘Tis then when The Hurdy Gurdy Man comes singing songs of love. That’s when The Hurdy Gurdy Man comes singing songs of love:

“Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy,” He sang. “Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy,” He sang.

Now that I know the Light and live in the Morning, being awakened is more important to me than having a ham sandwich (it was Joseph Campbell who said that, I’m just quoting him). The visible world and man-led efforts are not primary for me anymore. I recognize the crown of human pride, and I refuse it. Instead, I choose NOT to refuse the crown of glory Christ offers to His people.

“This is the refreshing,” Jesus says to the people of the world, who will not hear unless they accept and receive the gift of God. The gift of God is to impart His Holy Spirit, by which I have learned to discern His Voice from all the rest and to follow Him while others (unwittingly) make lies their refuge and (also unwittingly) hide themselves under falsehoods. My heart cries out, for I once stood with all the people in all the lies. Eventually, Isaiah says, the LORD will sweep away all the refuse and all the lies and will determine a destruction upon the whole earth. I would have been there with them, but for The Person who came to me, singing songs of Love.

The Lord broke through my hard shell saying, “Knock and the door will be opened; seek and you will find.” Practically the minute I did, He came to me, singing songs of Love. And now, He enters daily and, as Morning Breaks, I resume my pecking.

WHAT KIND OF CORD?

A clear contrast came through my reading this morning about two types of cords:

(1) The Ungodly draw iniquity with cords of vanity.

(2) The Godly .are drawn by the Holy Spirit.

Am I pulling or being pulled? One cord is golden; the other is not. Which one is which, and how can we tell? Chime in if you care to share. FYI, this photograph was posted on Twitter by Ernie and Berti.

THE DAWNING LIGHT?

J.R.R. Tolkien said, “You can only come to the morning through the shadows.” This image seems to echo that claim, and matches my experience. For me, life was like being a baby chick inside an eggshell who didn’t realize it was my job to peck.

It was very challenging to peck my way out, because the shell was hard as rock. I was telling myself and that others that everything was FINE, expletive deleted. Prayerful people saw my plight and started marching around my situation, lowing like cattle. I believe their prayers were like ivy crawling up the walls of my fortress, actually etching cracks into the walls of my fortress. They had been captives themselves, so God heard their pleas for another captive to be set free. My Jericho walls began to crumble and at last came tumbling down.

That is why I published my story entitled “Whit’s End: Breakdown to Breakthrough.” You can take a LOOK INSIDE at Amazon.com (here’s the link):

Or you can order it from my website, but it doesn’t give you the option to LOOK INSIDE. Here’s that link:

SACRED MOMENTS?

A week ago, my husband and I were reading at the beach, sitting under an umbrella we had planted deep in the sand that edges Hilton Head Island. Families were splashing in the water, dogs were romping, people were riding bikes on the hard pack of the receding tide. Quietly, my husband set his book aside to say, “I just saw a dolphin.”

“Ohhhh,” I said, just as quietly, and closed my book to stop what I was doing. The weird thing was: so did everyone else. It was as if this had been announced over some invisible loudspeaker system. In an instant, the entire population of beachgoers went silent. People in the water stopped and stood, facing outward. Even the dogs somehow knew. There was a hush over all our world, like it was Christmas Eve or something.

Last year, everyone at our hotel was similarly gathered, the parking lot filled with total strangers standing together for the solar eclipse. It was that same palpable hush. The world went silent, with everyone focused to behold just like when the school of dolphins was gracing us with their gentle loping as they swam past in the sparkling waves.

A friend of ours recently had a similar encounter in her backyard when family of deer wandered toward a brood of wild turkeys with babies. She said she held her breath as the mama deer approached the mama turkey and the two mamas were facing each other, practically nose-to-nose. She could not believe her eyes when the mama turkey elongated her neck and placed her head on the ground before the mama deer. Or when the mama deer bent onto her knees to do the same.

WOULD YOU, COULD YOU?

This is to let you know that my website has been revamped. As of yesterday, the OLD is gone and all is NEW. I would dearly love feedback to such issues as:

Is it easy enough to navigate through the pages?

Does the site look pleasing to your eyes?

Is it visually confusing or confusing in any way?

Any and all feedback would be most welcome. With me, you can be rigorously honest. I thank you, in advance, for your comments and suggestions. Here's the link:

A CAMPFIRE CALLED RECOVERY?

I always loved campfires: sitting around them in the night, telling stories and singing in harmony. Now it seems I’m all about fire.

My Fire. With my voice and pen, I tell on myself. My books share what a mess I was facing and what happened next; my blog posts do the same but in the present tense. I want to share with such honesty that others will, too. I want my fire to inspire your fire.

Your Fire. Everybody has a story to tell about some worst thing turning into the very best, how an agony was turned to triumph, or a mess became their message. I help people publish those kinds of stories. Campfire stories: strange but true.

Our Campfire Stories. I recently revamped my website to encourage gathering around Him (and in Him and by Him) to tell of HIs works and sing His praises. My favorite campfires are Twelve-Step meetings because that’s where people share their God Sightings. I need to hear true stories, hot off the press! Stories of Divine Reversals (think reversals of fortune) are what best fuels my faith into a TRUST to go God’s Way instead of my own. Reversals of fortune abound from doing that. My purpose in life is to tell of God’s works and sing HIs praises because why? Because “I can’t, but God can, and look what happens when I let Him.”
