San Agustin to co-host nat’l critics workshop May 4-7

THE University of San Agustin (USA) in Iloilo City will co-host with De La Salle University (DLSU) this year’s KRITIKA, the national workshop on art and art criticism on May 4 -7, in the USA President’s Conference Room.

KRITIKA is a summer workshop in criticism, covering various arts and culture, including architecture, literature, visual arts, film, theatre, multi-art, popular culture, and gastronomy. In this one-week live-in workshop, established art critics and talented young scholars gather to form an intellectual community. In line with contemporary critical practice, KRITIKA retains interdisciplinal and multidisciplinal ways of approaching art and cultural forms as texts. This practice is enriched with the creative integration of concepts and modes from diverse disciplines.

Rolando Tolentino, cultural critic and Dean of the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication, is the workshop director.

He is supported by a distinguished panel of experts which includes: urban design and landscape architect Paulo Alcazaren, cultural critic and educator Isagani R. Cruz, literature scholar Isidoro M. Cruz, heritage conservationist Rene Luis Mata, visual art critic and artist Cid Reyes, culinary expert and visual artist Claude Tayag, and cultural historian Jose Victor Torres.

Chosen as the 2015 fellows are: Vijae Orquia Alquisola (literature/cultural heritage), Jose Santos P. Ardivilla (pop culture), Gregory Mark Del Carmen (pop culture), Olivia Kristine Nieto (theatre), Seneca N. Pellano (literature), Tito R. Quiling, Jr. (film/architecture), Juan Miguel Leandro L. Quizon (cultural studies), Guillermo Ramos, Jr. (gastronomy), Angela Velasco (gastronomy), and Mavreen Jackie Yapchiongco (literature/architecture).

This project is organized by the DLSU Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center, co-hosted by the USA Fray Luis De Leon Creative Writing Center and the USA Graduate School, and supported by the DLSU Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, the USA Special Projects Office, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. The food writing fellowships are sponsored by the DLSU Angelo King Institute for Economics and Business Studies.

San Agustin hosts K to 12 training for Grade 10 teachers

The 111 year old University of San Agustin (USA) in Iloilo City is hosting the mass training for Grade 10 Teachers of the K to 12 Basic Education Program in MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health) and Filipino this summer 2015. The training for MAPEH teachers was held on 11-15 May 2015; that for Filipino teachers is being held from 18 to 22 May 2015.

More than 1,200 grade school teachers coming from various divisions of the Department of Education (DepEd) in Panay and Guimaras are attending the training being conducted at the University Auditorium housed at the Urdaneta Hall. Also in attendance are Dr. Gemma Ledesma, DepEd Regional Director, Dr. John Arnold Siena, National Educators Academy of the Philippines Director, Dr. Julieta Braga, DepEd Regional Supervisor for MAPEH and Mrs. Ma. Fe Sumaculub, DepEd Music and Arts Division Supervisor.

Fr. Frederick C. Comendador, O.S.A., USA President, in his welcome message said, “We would like to take our hats off to all of you, our dear teachers, for your dedication to your vocation – to your calling as educators. We salute you for your sacrifices, and commend you for your openness to learn new things, and when appropriate, re-learn or unlearn some things. We salute you for embracing change.”

“We are very happy that the Department of Education has once again tapped the expertise of the University, the College of Education in particular, for this training,” said Dr. Belinda Valaquio, Dean of the USA College of Education. The College takes pride as the only Center of Development in Teachers Education in Region 6, and the Department of Education’s Center for Training Institution for INSET Programs. San Agustin Tops Med Tech Board Exam

The College of Pharmacy and Medical Technology of the University of San Agustin (USA) tops this year’s Licensure Examination for Medical Technologists with a 94.37% passing percentage. USA ranked first among the schools with 50 or more examinees and the only university outside Luzon to have made it to the list. Other schools that made it to the top 5 list are Our Lady of Fatima University, Antipolo City, (91.67%);  Far Eastern University, Manila, (88.64%);  Lyceum of the Philippine – Batangas , Inc., (85.71%);  and Centro Escolar University , Manila, (83.53%).
 “The College of Pharmacy and Medical Technology is very thankful for the recent board performance of the Medical Technology program graduates. Being the top 1 performing school is what every administrator hopes for. The college has been very keen in producing competent medical technologists and because of this, we have to maintain our curricular standards and to ensure that our graduates are armed with the necessary training before leaving the portals of the University to find their own person and excel in their chosen field.” said Zesil Gay E. Gelle, dean of the USA College of Pharmacy and Medical Technology.

Comendador, O.S.A., University of San Agustin President, expressed his sincerest appreciation to the college  for being the top performing school in the last board exam. “The University of San Agustin Medical Technology program has proven, time and again, its worth by consistently producing quality graduates as seen in the board examination results. We are happy and proud for another honor brought by the program to the university. Kudos to the dean, the teachers and the students!”
 
The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced that 1,419 out of 1,942 passed the Medical Technologists Licensure Examination given in the cities of Manila, Baguio, Cebu, Davao and Iloilo this March 2015. (EAR Office, University of San Agustin).

2 Augustinians top Nursing Board Exam

Gerardo B. Malayo and Willie Jude S. Au of the University of San Agustin (USA) College of Nursing placed 9th and 10th, respectively, in the November 2014 Nursing Licesure Examination (NLE). Malayo garnered an 85.00 percentage rating while Au got an 84.80 percentage rating. 

Of the 481 nursing schools in the country, the USA College of Nursing placed 10th in the top performing schools recognized by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). The College has a 92.26% over-all passing performance vis-a-vis the 57.29% national passing rate.

“We are extending our warmest congratulations to Batch 2014 for passing the November 2014 NLE! We will always carry you in our hearts and in our prayers with joy as you scale greater heights, touch hearts and transform lives as Augustinian Nurse,” said Louie P. Hijalda, Dean of the USA College of Nursing.

Fr. Frederick C. Comendador, O.S.A., President, University of San Agustin, expressed his appreciation on the recent board performance of the college. “I wish to congratulate the College of Nursing for producing topnochers and for performing exceptionally well in the last board exam. The result is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our Augustinian academic community. Our sincere congratulations go as well to our graduates and their parents for the unique honor they have given to the university.”
PRC announced that 15,292 out of 26,690 examinees passed the Nurse Licensure Examination given by the Board of Nursing (BoN) in the cities of Manila, Bacolod, Baguio, Cabanatuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Dagupan, Davao, Iloilo, Laoag, Legazpi, Lucena, Pagadian, Pampanga, Tacloban, Tuguegarao and Zamboanga.

PRC and BoN released the official results of November 29-30, 2014 Nursing Licensure Examination last 23 January 2015, 29 working days after the last day of examination.  (EAR Office University of San Agustin)
