When it comes to a building project, it's surprising how often fire safety is overlooked...

During the construction stage of a building project, it’s essential that the principles of fire safety are maintained throughout to ensure you avoid any expensive retrospective action. Often, temporary conditions are complex, high-risk materials are being used, and a phased construction and occupation is required.

Just because a property or site is undergoing building work, it doesn’t stop fire regulations from needing to be maintained. From the start of a project, during building, once the property is completed, fire safety is a legal requirement.

Our Fire Consultancy Services monitor any design and construction stage of a project to make sure nothing will have a negative impact on the fire system’s efficiency.

The team at Drax Services are able to produce a construction site fire safety risk assessment to help outline measures needed to ensure life safety and property protection during the building stage.

The latest figures published by the government estimate that the cost of false alarms in the UK is around £1 billion a year. Much of this cost is borne by commerce from lost production and interruptions to business.

The measures to limit false alarms are divided into eight groups:

* Siting and selection of manual call points
* Selection and siting of automatic fire detectors
* Selection of system type
* Protection against electromagnetic interference
* Performance monitoring of newly commissioned systems
* Filtering measures
* System management
* Regular servicing and maintenance

Appropriate and effective technology is one of the key drivers for monitoring the above and reducing the costs of false alarms for fire-detection and fire-alarm systems.

What should a comprehensive Fire Risk Assessment include?

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 order states that if you own or manage a non-domestic property, you have a legal responsibility to protect everyone who works, lives or visits there from any potential fire threats.

You can complete a fire risk assessment yourself with the help of standard fire safety risk assessment guides. If you do not have the in-house expertise to complete a thorough assessment, you will need to appoint a ‘competent person’ to help you, this would usually be a professional risk assessor.

Read our blog post http://bit.ly/2nokdS1 for a step-by-step guide to creating a comprehensive assessment or contact us on 0345 459 2300 for assistance.

It is a requirement of law that your business is fire safe for all. Is your emergency evacuation plan compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act 2005?

Under current fire safety legislation it is the responsibility of the person(s) having responsibility for the building to provide a fire safety risk assessment which includes an emergency evacuation plan for all people likely to be in the premises, including disabled people, and how that plan will be implemented.

If you are responsible for the life safety of large crowds, there are many factors to consider;

If your venue is used for sporting events, you will need to be familiar with legislation surrounding safety at sports grounds. We can help with that.

You will be likely to gather large crowds that are unfamiliar with your venue, requiring more guidance and assistance in the event of a fire. We can help with that, too.

You may be responsible for the safety of animals, who are liable to be frightened in the event of a fire and may endanger the safety of the public as a result. You guessed it...

If you want to learn more about how Drax Services can keep your staff, customers and venue safe, contact us on 0345 459 2300 or email info@draxservices.co.uk.
