What's MCLXXIV + CXXXIX?

From here to infinity

Amateur astronomer Detlef Hartmann tackled a daunting task: using his home-made 44 cm telescope, observe the "empty" patch of sky Hubble looked at in the first Deep Field - an observation which revealed over 1500 galaxies and changed the way we look at the Universe.

The results are, simply, stunning. I show them side-by-side below, but go to my blog for an animated morphing GIF. I also wrote up the details (with links) and added more than a dash of personal philosophy. Enjoy.

Space Shuttle Endeavour's Final Voyage

This is an absolutely gorgeous time-lapse video of Space Shuttle Endeavour's final voyage. While I'm sad in many ways that the Shuttle program has ended, I'm happy that I get to go see Endeavour next weekend at the California Science Center!
