Reuters News, Apr-11-2014 – Next week's 50th anniversary of the first Ford Mustang evokes a long-ago day when new cars could generate as much excitement, at least in America, as new iPads. The car caused a sensation, even though it wasn't a technological marvel like Apple's tablet.
Instead it was simply a smartly styled body mounted atop the underpinnings of a pedestrian compact car, the Ford Falcon. One Ford executive boasted, in the idiom of the day, that it was like "turning a librarian into a sexpot." Yet with room for four, the Mustang was surprisingly practical.
The car's styling strikingly captured the exuberant youth culture of America in the early 1960s - and its $2,368 price tag made it affordable to the horde of baby boomers that were just reaching driving age or heading off to college. That price was for the basic six-cylinder engine, but buyers could add extra-cost (and handsomely profitable) options, including an automatic transmission, air conditioning, convertible top and a 289-cubic-inch V8 engine.
American popular culture was gaining global reach in the early 1960s, and the Mustang went along for the ride. Over the years Mustang clubs were established in more than 150 nations, many of which opposed American policies but admired its lifestyle.
With that kind of enduring global appeal, Ford has decided to sell the new 2015 Mustang globally for the first time, rather than make non-North American buyers specially import the car.
For the birthday next week, the Mustang Club of America is organizing five-day celebrations at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina and the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Nevada, where thousands of Mustangs from each decade will meet.

**Breaking News Ford Motor Company Dearborn, MI**

The Ford Focus retains its title as world’s best-selling vehicle nameplate for 2013, according to Ford analysis of the just-released full-year Polk new vehicle registration data from IHS Automotive. The news comes as a new Focus four-door sedan prepares to make its debut at next week’s 2014 New York International Auto Show.  Registrations of the compact Focus were up 8.1 percent with 1,097,618 cars sold worldwide last year. That compares with global Focus sales of 1,014,965 in 2012.

Market gains for Focus continue to be driven by consumer demand in China. China registrations were up 50 percent in 2013 to 403,219 vehicles, up from 268,354 vehicles in 2012. China now is responsible for just more than one out of three Focus vehicles sold globally, based on Polk data.  The debut of the new Focus four-door sedan and the Focus Electric in New York follows the Geneva Motor Show debut in March of the Focus three- and five-door hatchback and wagon. A new version of the performance Focus ST will be shown later this year.

The redesigned Ford Focus offers a bolder exterior design, a more intuitive and upscale interior, a host of technologies uncommon for a compact car and the additional powertrain option of Ford’s award-winning 1.0-liter EcoBoost® engine with a new six-speed manual transmission in the U.S.-spec Focus. While U.S. EPA fuel economy ratings are not yet available, Ford expects the 1.0-liter EcoBoost Focus to raise the bar in fuel efficiency among non-hybrid compact vehicles.

For 2015, Focus adds an SE Sport Package, which includes new body treatments, paddle shifters (requires automatic transmission), a revised touring suspension, 17-inch black gloss aluminum wheels and P215/50 HR-17 tires.

The paddle shift feature provides drivers an additional element of control by allowing them to simulate the manual gear selection aspects of a manual transmission and extract more power from their engines.

Today is the day! It's the 50th anniversary of the Mustang's introduction to the public. At Ford we celebrate and thank the millions of customers who entrusted their faith in us. In turn, Ford delivered driving excitement to several generations of customers. Two nights ago, the Ford team replicated a project of putting a Mustang on the observation deck of the Empire State Building in New York. This time, the vehicle was assembled in cold, wind and snow. Please watch the video clip for how this feat was completed

**Breaking News Ford Motor Company - Dearborn, MI**

Ford turned in its best U.S. retail sales performance in eight years with March sales driven higher by strong demand for F-Series trucks, Fusion, and Escape. “March was a great month for Ford and the industry overall,” said Ford Sales Analyst Erich Merkle.  “We saw a significant surge in sales about mid-month and a strong close to the month as spring started to arrive in many parts of the country.”

F-Series topped the 70,000-vehicle sales mark in March. That’s only happened four times in the last seven years, according to Merkle.

“With 70,940 pickups sold, we had our best month for F-Series sales since 2008, with sales up 5 percent over last year,” he said. There was more good news for F-Series.  Merkle said that according to Polk registration data, the half-ton V6 pickup truck segment grew 600 percent over the last three years and F-150 V6 trucks – both EcoBoost and the 3.7-liter – are responsible for a whopping 91 percent of that growth.

“You really can’t underestimate the significance of that,” he said.  “It’s huge. People always ask me; how does F-Series continue to perform against new competitors from Ram and Chevrolet? A big part of our competitive edge is EcoBoost.”  Merkle said F-150 commands a 78 percent share of the half-ton V6 pickup truck segment.

“Prior to three years ago, people said pickup truck buyers want a V8, end of story.  Things are much different today,” he said.  “Our take rates for the month of March for the V6 F-150 were at 57 percent.  That’s as high as they’ve ever been, with 45 percent coming from EcoBoost and 12 percent coming from the base 3.7-liter engine.  In all actuality, Ford has made the V6 a very viable and in many ways a much more preferable alternative for consumers than the V8.”

Fusion also had an outstanding month with sales up 9 percent from last year’s record month.
