Trust the process

My mantra when teaching doula students is "Trust the Process".

There are many different ways this philosophy impacts on life in general, but never more so than in birth.

From focussing excessively on a "due date", to worrying about whether a baby will be "too big" for a mother's pelvis, or being so obsessed with the foetal monitor during labour, that the mother, the key player, is ignored.

Trust the process ... a baby will trigger labour when it is ready.
Trust the process ... a woman will grow a baby the perfect size to birth for her body.
Trust the process ... the mother is the most important factor in any labour.

Do you believe we encourage women to trust themselves, their babies and the process of birth?

Breast Feeding
The past few weeks have been an adventure not only in maternity care but also in breast feeding.
I love working with Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Julie Johnson. She is very knowledgeable, patient, gentle, holistic and kind.
Every week we have had an increasing number of women schedule breast feeding  appointments at Brickyard. So, due to popular demand, we decided to add another three hour class to our weekly schedule..
What exactly do we do at our breast feeding clinic? We discuss the birth, any medical conditions and breast feeding history. We assess the baby while he or she latches on to mother’s breast. We observe the reaction of the mother, as well as her positioning. We teach her how to help baby latch on appropriately and we practice. We do not rush our moms or babies.  We assess the baby’s mouth, lips and tongue.  We listen to the mother as she describes what she is feeling, and we listen to the baby. Is he or she swallowing? Is she quivering? Is she chomping at the breast? What is baby telling us?
Lately, we have found babies with a tongue or lip tie. When the baby has a tongue tie or lip tie the baby struggles to latch on or stay latched. The baby may chomp down on the breast, causing pain for the mother and frustration for both mom and baby.
I am learning so much from Julie, our nursing mothers and their little babies. Believe it or not, but even changing a baby’s diaper taught me that the baby may have an allergy to something mom is eating.
I breastfed my oldest daughter for three and a half years without any problems. I thought breast feeding was easy for everyone, until I had my second and third child. I struggled, I felt inadequate. How could I have such a difficult time nursing when I had been so successful in the past?
As I learn from Julie, our mom’s and babies, I re-live the emotional pain I felt when I quit nursing due to frustration and lack of support.  I am honored to learn more about and offer breast feeding classes to our community. Every healthy mom and baby deserve to breastfeed.
