Love this!
Ever been working heads down at the office, but needed to jot down a quick note for later? Send notes directly from your computer to your Android phone, and have them ready in your pocket when you need them.

Proud of this work and a very fun read for anyone who is thinking about checking out the book! #HowGoogleWorks
Across industries and around the world, technology is shaking up the old rules of business at what seems like a faster rate every day. Thanks to the internet, mobile devices and cloud computing, consumers are more empowered than ever, and individuals and small teams have the tools to make a huge impact.

To keep up, every business will have to adapt. This represents an incredible challenge, and an enormous opportunity. Over the course of the decade we spent leading Google, +Jonathan Rosenberg   and I had to relearn everything we thought we knew about running a successful business. To help you build from what we discovered, we’ve put together this brief guide with our rules for success in the Internet Century.

We hope it serves to encourage and inspire you. If you find it useful, there’s much more in our book at HowGoogleWorks.net.

Very funny look into the early days of Google!

#HowGoogleWorks

In the early days of Google, every new employee got a smiley helium balloon to put in their office. This was fun, and made it easy to spot the Nooglers. Then a certain head of products (+Jonathan Rosenberg ), decided that he could accelerate the Nooglers' entry into the company by popping the balloons.

As you can see from this video, made by a concerned Googler (Wesley Chan) back in 2003, we tried many tactics to stop the carnage and even considered starting a new company (balloogle?) to develop Jonathan-proof smiley balloons. In the end, it was the video itself that did the trick. Humor can be a very effective way to get Hippos to correct a wayward course.

This video has never been published outside the company. Enjoy!

Good insights from +Jonathan Rosenberg on what actually drives products to be successful!

#howgoogleworks

At Google we realized a few years back that our successful products were based on a strong set of technical insights. What makes for a unique technical insight? It’s a new way of applying technology or design that either drives down the cost or increases the functions and usability of the product significantly. For example, Google search looked at who was linking to which pages in order to deliver the most accurate search results. +Google Maps  brought drag and drop navigation to the browser. +Gmail  offered 250x the amount of storage than what was previously available.

We asked all of our product managers for their technical insights. It was an illuminating process because some had good answers while others did not.

I often look for the technical insights in products outside of Google and try to use them to predict who will succeed and who will fail. Some of my favorites are:

Pixar  ------------- pioneered the art of using computer animation to tell compelling human stories

+Salesforce --------- understood that enterprise software could be built in the cloud

+Uber  --------------- enabled people to use their smartphones to hail and pay for cabs

+H&M ---------------- re-engineered their supply chain to offer new clothing styles in their stores every day

What are some of your favorite examples of technical insights? Please leave comments.  #howgoogleworks  #technology #innovation #google

Proud to work at a place that gives me the freedom to be creative and take risks!
I’ve always thought that today’s businesses should be built on a strong set of strategic principles. Rigid MBA-style top down plans don’t work in today’s environment. It’s okay to have a plan, but you should understand it will change as you discover new things about the products and your market.

In my experience, if you give people a strong set of strategic principles and the freedom to build on them, they can do great things. #howgoogleworks
