My piece in last week's Financial Times about the key boat shows around the world. I should also mention the Cannes Boat Show here, which has grown in the past few years to really be a fantastic venue for the production builders (Azimut, Gulf Craft, Sunseeker) and others who won't make Monaco, but who benefit from the culture of yachting in the South of France, as well as the timing at the end of the charter season.

We have radically altered our own evolved species behavior by segregating children artificially in same-age peer groups instead of mixed-age communities, by compelling them to be indoors and sedentary for most of the day, by asking them to learn from text-based artificial materials instead of contextualized real-world activities, by dictating arbitrary timetables for learning rather than following the unfolding of a child’s developmental readiness.

Just off the phone with Oliver Corlette of Porto Montenegro about what could be a very exciting development in the Eastern Med. PM is partly owned by Canadian businessman and former chairman of Barrick Gold, Peter Munk, who I also interviewed last year about the genesis of that project. But I have yet to get there myself... on the list!

Progress in Congress

This year, at the American Boating Congress—during which leaders and lobbyists representing the breadth of America’s leisure boating industry convene on Washington D.C. to press their case to congressional lawmakers—John Mann, Chairman of the US Superyacht Association, had a very clear mandate. Two were regulatory (increasing the tonnage limit to allow more yachts to register under the US Flag and extending the duration of US cruising licenses) and two were legislative (waterway dredging and federal grants for yacht builders).
