Love Letter, a (beloved) game by Seiji Kanai (Alderac Entertainment Group), is now available for online play on Board Game Arena :)

Spread the love by giving us hundreds of ♥ !

Play now :

Yes, we love that game! It's easy to learn, fast to play, and addictively fun. It's also easy to pack, and great to introduce people to board games. Actually, a game of Love Letter has taken up residence in the suitcase of one of BGA admins, traveled to a lot of places and met a lot of people ;)

In Love Letter, you'll play a member of the royal court trying to seduce the most beautiful heart in the realm, the Princess! But you can't really meet her, you know, because of everything. So all you've got is ink, feather, paper, your literary talent and some ingenuity to get her your letters full of flame and passion through intermediaries of various ranks at court. But of course, anything can happen and get your letter lost in a duel, discarded by negligence, or blocked by a guard, if you do not benefit from the benevolent help of a handmaid. So you will have to choose carefully who to trust, and hope for the best that your letter may find its way to the closest person to the Princess, so that she reads your letter first - if you haven't been able to intrigue to block all the letters of other lovestruck noblemen!

Love Letter comes from Japan and was quite a novelty at the time of its release, coming to define a new class of minimalistic games. At the start of the game, you get one card, then on your turn, you draw another from the deck, and you chose which one to play. Simple, right? Yes, but... speculation comes into play. Each step of the way, you'll try to guess - by probability and intuition - in the hands of which of 8 possible characters the letters of your opponents are currently held, in order to disturb their plans and protect yours. And sometimes you'll be awesomely right... or mightily wrong ;) Then in any case, as the rounds are really quick, you'll be eager for the next one!

Race for the Galaxy : Rebel vs Imperium, is now available on Board Game Arena!

Play it now on

Two months after the first expansion "The Gathering Storm", we are happy to introduce now this second RFTG expansion.

So what's new on the Galaxy? Many things, including :
_ 3 new start worlds. Note that using this expansion, you must choose between 2 start worlds when you start the game, depending on your cards in hand.
_ 41 (!) new action cards (twice more than in the first expansion), including 6 new "6 cost development".
_ 5 new objectives.

In particular, Revel vs Imperium adds a new (optional) "takeover" power. Some cards allow you - under certain circonstances - to takeover your opponents military worlds. To do this, you need to have a Military that is at least equal to the cost of this world, plus the Military of your opponent. Thematically, takeovers represent border conflicts short of outright war in a galaxy still mostly at peace. If you choose a side - the Imperium or the Rebels - you expose yourself to attacks from the other side.

This expansion has been designed to be played with the first one, so you can play the two RFTG expansions together. By the way, a big thank you to the brave players who are testing this new expansion for few days : thanks to you everyone can now enjoy this expansion with no (major) bug :)

Please note that the "real" expansion includes in addition a "Solo" mode that has not been implemented on BGA.

And now is the time to make a choice : Imperium or Rebel? "You must choose,
but choose wisely".
May the Galaxy be with you :)

Dears players & dear friends,

Six years ago, the first version of Board Game Arena was released. It was something I developed for fun, during my spare time, just because there were technologies available to do it. I didn't care about producing a popular service, I didn't care about the design, I didn't care about many things, because I just wanted to show that it was possible to provide a simple service to discover board games online and promote our hobby.

I personally designed the BGA logo, which took me - maybe - 15 minutes, because it's a kind of requirement to have a logo, you know ... And after that, we never really give a damn to the general appearance of this service, or the coherence of design. We focused on making things efficient, even there were sometimes ugly. And most of you don't care about this, because there are good (and beautiful) games here.

However, players do care about the appearance, and this is why the modern board games are so beautiful. Game publishers now care a lot about the appearance of their games, and this contributes a lot to expand the audience of board games. For the same reasons, we decided to evolve, to make the appearance of BGA better and - to start - modify the visual identity of Board Game Arena.

By chance, we've been contacted by : Ian Parovel. Ian is a "Wonder maker", who worked both for the video game industry and the board games industry (Gosu, Colt Express, Deus, ...). Ian is also a BGA player, and tells us how much he was frustrated to see such a good service with a "suboptimal" appearance. We've been very excited when Ian accepted to work on the redesign of Board Game Arena and we'd like to thank him a lot for this!

Today, you will see very little changes on the website : the most visible changes are the colors of the navigation bar and - of course - the logo. But this is really the tip of the iceberg : the redesign of BGA will be visible step by step in the next months, and the result will be a coherent design with the new colors and the new identity.

To know more about this new identity, we asked few questions to Ian Parovel :

We just changed the way BGA manages quitting players.

Everyone of you, has played at least once against an opponent that finally left the game before the end.

This is very frustrating, and this is why Board Game Arena introduced a long time ago many tools to avoid this (ex: leave penalties). Thanks to this system, more than 98% of games started on BGA come to a normal end, and we are very proud of that.

However, the current system has some major flaws.

At first, when you have a temporary Internet issue, your opponent expels you from the game and you have no way to get back if your Internet problem is fixed.

Then, some (very bad) players are quitting games when they are losing, because they prefer to get a penalty instead of loosing some precious ELO points.

Finally, the whole system is based on 2 time limits (your time to think, plus a time limit per move) and complex expelling rules that a lot of you find confusing.

Few month ago, we post a message on BGA Facebook account to propose you a new way to handle these players, and you were very excited about it. We are proud today to introduce it.

The new rules are very simple:
* There is now a unique time limit for each player of a game.
* As soon as a player is out of time (ex: because he left the game), you can make him skip his turn.
* If this player get back in the game, he can continue to play normally.
* In any case, the game continue to the end, and ELO points are scored.
* You can also choose to abandon the game: a player out of time automatically accept to abandon the game.

This way, this is really useless to quit a game to avoid a defeat, and if you are disconnected during few minutes you can try to join again the game.

We hope that you'll find this new system clear and useful. Don't hesitate to post a comment if anything is unclear.

We wish you an happy new year 2015!

A board game is a fantastic tool to build links between people so we wish you a year filled with games!

2014 has been a great year for us at BGA. We published 14 new games this year, including Through the Ages, Hanabi and Tash-Kalar. We also published some great expansions (for Seasons, Saboteur and Hive).

We also introduced this year the turn based mode, a completely new way to enjoy board games on BGA. More than 2000 of you are playing turn-based games on a regular basis on BGA at now, and we'd like to continue to improve this mode this year!

You are now more than 250.000 players on this platform and you are more and more every day. We'd like to give you a big thank you for playing on this platform, for your suggestions and your support. We also would like to give a very special thanks to the game developers, the moderators, the game publishers, the translators and all players that choose to support this platform financially though BGA club membership: this platform exists and will continue to exists this year because everyone of you - and we never forget this.
