Mexico is both modern and traditional, it all depends on where you choose to live. You can live in a gated community with Costco, Starbucks, and stores that supply anything you could get in the States, or you could choose to live in a country setting with your own little farm. Mexico has something for everyone, but you need to seek it out.

Mexico is signaling both flexibility and doubt about the latest demands from Washington as the fifth round of talks on the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement formally opened Friday in the Mexican capital.
Mexican Secretary of Economy Ildefonso Guajardo, chief negotiator for Mexico during negotiations over NAFTA with Canada and the U.S., said this week Mexico might be willing to review the trade pact every five years.

The United States doubts that NAFTA talks, which began a fifth round in Mexico City on Wednesday, could imperil co-operation, according to one current and one former senior U.S. State Department official.
The bigger U.S. concern, the sources said, is that Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the leftist frontrunner for next July’s presidential election, will rip up the relationship if he wins.

The festivities to mark the Day of the Dead, which in Mexico’s main cities is incorporating the fun of Halloween - and trading solemn ceremony and private introspection for partying and public spectacle.
We like our Mexican culture, our Mexican traditions better. This is reviving a Mexican cultural tradition. And it’s displacing Halloween.
Until recently, some Mexicans fretted that the imported celebration of Halloween would overshadow the Day of the Dead. But the Mexican festival has proved remarkably resilient.
Mexicans mark the day by building altars in their homes, with offerings of food and drink for the departed and they still hold grave-side vigils on 2 November, when they believe their relatives return to visit.

The social contract is broken. Inequality becomes deadly in Mexico! Invisible walls enclose a wealthy core, creating a dividing line. As Mexico descends into its most violent year on record and the state proves incapable of responding, those with resources are taking matters into their own hands.
Any social compact is built in part on the agreement that security is a public good, shared and maintained by all. As Mexico’s rich effectively withdraw, the implicit arrangements that hold society together are breaking down.
