Clearly a study showed (Obesity Jan. 2018) that sitting around redistributes, adds fat inside and around your organs – not a good thing. This does not ‘cushion’ our internal organs but puts them at greater risk for heart and diabetes.

These British researchers measured “invisible,” inner fat— versus total ‘tummy’ (abdominal) fat. Monitoring for 1 week, 124 people (balanced for race age and ethnicity) they concluded “ the more time people spent sitting down during the day, the more visceral and total abdominal fat they had, as well as having more fat around their liver.”

As a result ‘inactivity’ has been added to ‘overweight’ as a risk factor for developing Diabetes. It was already well documented that a sedentary -sitting too much – life style was a risk factor for heart disease.

BTW the Public Health in UK recommends 150 weekly minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity, please get up and exercise! There is no minimum age for starting to exercise!

China is home to 1/5 of the world population, yet its health care system delivers both “traditional” Eastern medicine and Western medicine. Therefore, you may receive a prescription to go to the pharmacy where numerous natural herbs will be combined as ingredients for a soup, tea, or balm. You may be directed to acupuncture or a tai chi practitioner. Any or all may be employed to treat or prevent a condition. My first visit to mainland China took me to 4 medical centers thru out the country and to this day I remain respectful of their medical knowledge......

Do you know if you are the one in three Americans with high blood pressure (HBP)? I am sure you know it leads directly to heart attack, stroke, and a few others in between. Kidney disease, sexual dysfunction and vision loss, and result at any time. American Heat Association (AHA) and the American Stroke Association are sponsoring ‘life is why’.

Read on this website about common sense and blood pressure

Then please check your blood pressure, then go to heart.org/hbp to be counted toward the AHA goal of 5 million blood pressure checks by May 17.

New post has been published on Doc Handal's
April was designated as National Distracted Driving Awareness month – who knew? – but noteworthy is the fact the 60% of seniors (customarily and here defined as >65) talk on the phone while driving.
Does that worry anyone else but me?
Saturation of mobile phones is as high as 82%...

Sleepwalkers Fell No Pain
February 28, 2016 By Doc Leave a Comment

Another version of the French Paradox has been published. This is not about wine drinkers, but about sleepwalkers. These folks were found to have an increased risk (4x) for headaches and migraines when awake, and throughout sleepwalking episodes they are not likely to feel pain even if hurt.*

Know anyone who sleepwalks? If so, be aware that they can be hurt and not realize it until they are awake. So don’t be quick to judge their integrity if they are unable to recall the injury. There are many reports of people on Ambien® (Zolpidem), a commonly prescribed sleeping pill, getting up during the night, acting totally awake by speaking/eating, yet having no recall the next day. Popular Netflix show Grace & Frankie – episode 13 – illustrated this phenomenon.
