Nice story about a former NFL quarterback who's teaching high school algebra and making a difference in the lives of kids who need help most. Worth the read.

Nice 60 Minutes piece on Bond and the family behind the franchise. Can't wait for Nov. 9 and Skyfall.

You have to be ready for this kind of situation when you let the public name something through a vote. Reminds me of my hometown school district, which let kids name a new elementary school in the mid-1990s. Their choice? Springfield Elementary. Yes, the same as Bart Simpson's school.

I've never had a bad experience at 518. It's a nice place to take the family for a special night out that isn’t too expensive. The building is beautiful and the atmosphere is comfortable and not too stuffy. You'll going to get a good, solid Italian meal at 518 in a restaurant with a lively atmosphere.

We have stayed at the 1900 Inn on Montford a half dozen times over the last 10 years. Ron and Lynn (and their staff members) do a wonderful job creating a comfortable, relaxing environment. They’ve put thought into every last detail of the inn, and they add wonderful touches like wine and live music in the evenings. They’re very well connected in Asheville, too, and can give you a recommendation for just about every area restaurant. And occasionally they’ll surprise you—one morning a chef from Biltmore popped in and made breakfast for us. A top-notch experience.

I had a mushroom-Swiss burger, and it was one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. The fries were outstanding, too. A restaurant that seems to care about getting all the details right, even if they aren't serving white-tablecloth fare. Sit outside if the weather's nice.

I posted an unfavorable review of Cinelli's a while back. Here's my edit... When we first moved to the area, we felt it was a good neighborhood-style Italian restaurant. Unfortunately, it declined in quality over the last three years (food, service and décor). They've done a complete renovation recently, and the décor is vastly improved. Still a little overpriced, but we’ll be back to give the food another shot. Keeping our fingers crossed.

Mia Francesca has a beautiful interior. We ate there early in the evening, so we missed the dinner rush. But we had excellent service and enjoyed the atmosphere, which is probably a lot of fun later at night. The food is traditional Italian, just much higher quality than your standard family Italian joint. Be warned: The portions are large, and the food can be quite heavy.

I have eaten here twice and loved it both times. The food is fantastic. The restored Heilig-Levine building is gorgeous. The atmosphere is energetic--this is not the place for a quiet dinner. My favorite non-food part of the experience: watching the pita bread blow up like balloons in the oven as they cook.

A very nice surprise. I worked near here for a few years and stopped in for a quick sandwich (and with very low expectations...it's in the back of a gas station). I found a well-run restaurant, especially considering the volume they did and the location right off Interstate 40. It's a Subway, so the food isn't really different from what you'll find at other locations. And it's in back of a gas station, so don't expect much in the way of decor. But I'd always get what I wanted quickly when I stopped in. That helps when you're on the run.
