I just went, there are new owners. They are sprucing up the place, and the food was amazing!! The setting is beautiful. Gardens, koi ponds, bamboo, and water fountains surround the tables. Go!

Although this restaurant is very expensive and probably somewhat over-priced, they do have an amazing setting to enjoy a meal in. For that very special occassion, this is certainly one of the best in Ventura County.

We went to Ojai for a weekend getaway last Easter and decided to eat out at a few restaurants in town. We had a great experience at Suzanne's and Osterio Monte Grappa but had one of the worst dining experiences at the Ranch House. First of all, this restaurant have quite a reputation to uphold. Wine Spectator awards and Best Of... accolades pepper its walls while hundreds of gushing Yelp reviews can be read online. And of course, the accompanying prices on the menu quietly but obviously dictate that this is not an establishment to be trifled with - which would have been fine if they lived up to the hype. Stepping into the restaurant, I was already disappointed - they had the most hideous flowery carpet which clashed with the plain plank wood walls. But that was still okay - perhaps its one of those places where all the attention is lavished on the food. And I would have been completely fine with that - but the restaurant's brochures styled the restaurant as having gourmet garden dining - and I was very very disappointed in the 'garden' -because perhaps having grown up in South East Asia, what passes as a garden here would be considered an over-run back yard in desperate need of a a gardener and some sharp plant trimmers. Just because there is a lot of trees and flowers , festooned with lots of lights everywhere does not a garden make. However, I am aware of this bias and asked By (who grew up in the East Coast) his opinion on the self-proclaimed gourmet garden - he said the garden was 'a lot of green with pretty lights, but nothing special. " So there you have it. Anyway the food -By had the scallops (claimed as one of their world-renowned specialties, it is claimed) which were ordinary at best, served with a side of mashed potato that looked and tasted like it came out of a box. The asparagus and carrots were soggy and uninspiring. I had the rack of lamb - which also was "just okay." - and does not justify the prices nor the hype that this place has. Definitely not a winner in my book.

It was a nice bday gesture from my son and the restaurant was really pretty but the food portion was a little bit small for me but we did have a good time and the wine was great also.I will go there for their brunch to see if its woth the drive.

The Ranch House has been a beloved institution for decades, literally Paul Newman's favorite restaurant. Founded by Allan Hooker it was one of the first restaurants to feature at least one vegetarian entree at all times. The restaurant is situated in a garden with tables both inside and on a porch overlooking the herb/flower garden and throughout a surrounding patio. At all times of year it is a wonderful atmosphere to enjoy a meal. The food is excellent. Ranging over a wide spectrum, there are a sufficient variety for each person in the family. In particular our family likes the pate for an appetizer and the fish dishes for main courses although the steak is always good. The New Orleans delight ( meringue, coffee ice cream and caramel sauce ) is worth the trip alone. We have returned to the The Ranch House for forty years on special occasions and just for an excellent meal and have never been disappointed in either the food or the service. In addition, the wine list is outstanding. If you haven't been you have a treat in store. P.S. They also sell separately their home baked breads which are excellent as well as herb preparations.
