If you read only one thing today, this is it. From +Holley Gerth and +Compassion International

"Words from someone who knows what it’s like to not only survive difficult circumstances but come out thriving on the other side of them.

"Someone who has been told 'you are a mistake' and then learned from God that they are a world-changing miracle."

I met Jonathan while I was in the DR (he was our host), and I LOVE him. I'm totally undone here this morning by this and by his entire letter. If you've ever wondered if your words can make a difference, this is proof of it. I couldn't read this without weeping. I'm so not kidding. Don't miss it. It's an example of changing many by loving one

To some, the message of the cross is foolishness. Call us fools then. But also call us this: People of the cross.
Because in the end, it’s the only label that really matters.
It's the faces. We won't forget the faces. The set jaws, the stoic eyes. We can't forget how they were paraded along the seashore. They were earnest, and on their knees, before their martyrdom, knowing that it was going to end right there, in the sand. All because they wer

Did you know only 1% of +Compassion International  sponsors visit their child? It takes sacrifice, but what an investment in the life of that child! Here's a story of one meeting in the Dominican Republic this past week. It's all about relationship. #DR2015
I woke up yesterday after only two hours of sleep. I’d been up until 5 a.m. trying to find words to tell you about Tuesday… about hanging out with the sweet moms and babes who are served by Compassion’s Child Survival Program, about sharing a meal with them, about winding our way across roughly paved streets and uneven, disintegrating …

“Sometimes," said Pooh, “the smallest things take up the most room in your heart.” #DR2015   #compassionbloggers  +Compassion International
The night before I left my comfortable corner, I ran to Family Dollar. In less than half an hour I’d tossed $100 worth of gifts in my cart, enough to fill a large suitcase that I could carry to the poor children and their families in the Dominican Republic. But what I’ve learned yet again is that in …

I go weak this week. I go to know their names and to blog the stories of this +Compassion International sponsor trip to the #dominicanrepublic .
I’ve been working out of my quart-size baggie since getting back from Haiti last month so I didn’t have to rethink and repack it. Today I’ll add a little more moisturizer and a little more foundation to the mini travel containers and set out my malaria med to start tomorrow. Friday I’ll say goodbye …

Are you afraid to rest? #StillSaturday
“I wonder sometimes if we’re afraid of rest. We’re conditioned by 24/7 news and Facebook updates to be afraid we’ll miss out on something we “ought” to know. We’re afraid we’ll lag further behind in the race to some steadily receding finish line like Archimede’s tortoise. We’re afraid we’ll let someone down, as others’ expectations …

Five Authors on Being a Writer - Episode 2: in which I talk to +Michelle DeRusha  about her writing life.

(By the way, if you want to watch funny videos with hysterical hosts who talk really fast and use lots of cool graphics, check out the Vlog Brothers - https://www.youtube.com/user/vlogbrothers. If you want to see a middle-aged woman try to figure out YouTube who talks to people about the writing life, well, watch my video series!) #amwriting #writinglife

Here’s the thing. Children in the DR are just like children anywhere. They love electronics. But . . .  +Compassion International  #compassionbloggers   #DR2015

I was broken in so many ways on my trip to the Dominican Republic with Compassion International last week.

On our last day, several students from the Leadership Development Program shared their stories with us, and I was reduced to tears. Here's one of the reasons why. #DR2015 #childsponsorship #compassion

"What does a mother do when she must leave not to party but to provide? When she struggles to hang on to Jesus herself, how does she instill the gospel in the hearts of her family? How does she inspire hope when life seems hopeless?" #DR2015  +Compassion International
She greets us at the door with shy hugs. The kids leave and return with plastic lawn chairs to supplement the tattered gold sofa. She wants us to sit. There are no windows, so we strain to see, strain to hear her heart through the rhythm of the rain as it pulses on the corrugated tin roof, crescendos and …

Introduction
Once a nurse, always a nurse,” they say. But now I spend my days with laptop and camera in tow as I look for the extraordinary in the ordinary, the beauty in the moment. I’m a Michigan gal, mom to two, grandmom to two, and wife to one. My husband and I live on 50 acres in the same 150-plus-year-old farmhouse he grew up in. I love this quote by Mary Oliver, “Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.” That’s how I want to live. And I’m still learning how to be. Still.
